Highlights from national exit poll in U.S. elections
The Associated PressPublished: November 7, 2006

IRAQ:

A majority — about six in 10 voters — disapproved of the war in Iraq, and they strongly favored Democrats for the House. Only a third said the war has improved the long-term security of the United States, down from almost half — 46 percent — in the 2004 national exit poll.

A majority of voters said the U.S. should withdraw some or all of its troops from Iraq, and they overwhelmingly supported Democratic House candidates. Republicans were buoyed by the four in 10 who wanted to keep the troop level as is or send more.

TERRORISM:

Voters' fear of terrorism was not much help to Republicans. About three-fourths of voters said terrorism was a very important issue. But almost half did not give either party an advantage in keeping the nation safe from terrorists, and those people strongly favored Democrats.

BUSH:

Four out of 10 House votes were cast at least partly to oppose President George W. Bush, voters said. More than twice as many voters said they felt angry toward Bush as felt enthusiastic. About six in 10 disapproved of Bush's handling of his job — a boon for Democratic candidates.

SCANDAL:

Just over half of voters disapproved of how Republican leaders in Congress dealt with Mark Foley and the congressional page scandal, and they voted for House Democrats by 3-1. Three-fourths of voters said corruption and scandal were important to their votes.

PESSIMISTIC MOOD:

Four in 10 voters said they expect life for the next generation to be worse than life today; three in 10 said it would be better. The pessimists were more likely to vote Democratic, and the optimists favored Republicans.
