Bush, Stung By Election Loss, May Need to Change Style, Agenda
Bush, Stung By Election Loss, May Need to Change Style, Agenda

Richard Keil and Catherine Dodge 2 hours, 31 minutes ago

Nov. 8 (Bloomberg) -- The political world that George W. Bush inhabited for the last six years -- the one he ruled -- ended yesterday.

The new world, in which Democrats have picked up more than the 15 seats needed to control the House while bolstering their ranks in the Senate, will require painful adjustments in the president's governing style, compelling him to choose between the role of a partisan warrior or a more conciliatory leader who seeks bipartisan accords to get things done.

Bush's agenda will change, too. He'll be under intense pressure to pull troops from Iraq; defense of his tax cuts will become more difficult; and plans to revamp New Deal-era social programs will be downsized, or ditched. Immigration overhaul, an energy independence plan, and the pursuit of free-trade pacts may be doable goals -- if Bush can cut deals with foes he once steamrolled.........

http://news.yahoo.com/s/bloomberg/20061108/pl_bloomberg/akvapolfp7ac

``It's a new day,'' said former Louisiana Democratic Senator John Breaux. ``If the president wants to get some things accomplished, he's going to have to involve the Democrats.''

As Texas governor, Bush worked with a Democratic legislature to improve schools and simplify taxes. As president, he found it far easier to use loyal Republican majorities in the House and Senate to crush Democrats, earning an enmity that may come back to haunt him.

2. Wonder if he'll decompensate completely on camera soon
Bush, Cheney, and Rove are all dangerous men. Cornered animals -- even rats -- can do a lot of damage, and the Dems will have to watch each others' backs.

But, you know, I think the Dems are up to it.

7. I'm wondering whether the republi-CONS will use the waning days
of their majority (before the new term begins) to bastardize the laws - so as of January, the MINORITY party gets the subpoena power and can thwart the will of the majority. Well, why not? They've been committed to doing so for years now, for real. Why not try to rig the system again? Wouldn't put it past 'em.

Unfortunately, I think the Sore Losermans in the White House will A) try to keep running things as though nothing's changed and they're still god, and Iraq is going swimmingly well and we're winning; and B) fight, lie, cheat, pervert, and manipulate the system so none of the rules apply to them now. Subpoenas? They'll try to flout them as though they are untouchable. I hope Nancy Pelosi has other ideas.

SO proud to be able to tell my daughter that we have the first-ever FEMALE Speaker of the House in American history!!!

49. He did not improve schools in Texas, he just says he did. Not tru!
And he did simplify taxes, he reduced all taxes that corporations and the wealthy would pay and shifted the costs to local governments who taxed the middle-class to make up the loss of revenue.

8. speaker of da house is high up in the chain of succession, resigning wouldn't be inappropriate
Edited on Wed Nov-08-06 03:02 AM by anotherdrew
at least he could appoint a new VP, a 'uniter not divider' type and then resign.

it would be best for our "national security" if he did one or the other ASAP

he needs to address the security issue, we can't have a lame duck whitehouse for over two years after all... resigning is the only sensible thing for him to do,

20. Okay, think about what you're saying here
Dick Cheney is NOT going to be running for President in 2008, at least that's what he tells us. Of course, he could be appointed by Shrub to find an appropriate candidate to annoint, and pick himself (hmmmm, when has something like that happened??) but I have my doubts about that.

If Shrub talks Cheney into resigning (yeah, like that's gonna happen) in order to pick a new VP that he will resign in favor of, that person immediately becomes the leading candidate for the 2008 Republican nomination. And, by being able to serve less than two years of Chimpy's unexpired term, would be constitutionally eligible to run again in 2012, given that he wins in 2008.

No thanks, we'll pick our own Presidential candidates. There's far worse things than a lame duck President in his final years of office.

29. Being the chosen "pick" of Bush/Cheney is clearly the kiss of death.
It wouldn't matter whom they anointed--whoever he was, he wouldn't get elected.

I have to go along with the person who said the best way Bush could change his agenda would be to RESIGN. Now THAT might just make his approval numbers finally move back up out of the toilet.

10. Bush is constitutionally incapable of changing either his style . . .
or his agenda . . . because it's all about HIM, and it's going to stay all about HIM, despite losing control of the legislative branch . . . he'll quickly go from being the president who used the veto the least to the president who uses the veto the most . . . and he'll continue to do whatever the hell he wants -- UNTIL the Congress slams a big hammer down on his ass . . .

28. Light Bulb Joke
A reporter asked John Kerry, Al Gore and George W. Bush how many presidential candidates it took to change a light bulb.

John Kerry gave a long detailed response about how that depended on what type of light bulb it was.

Al Gore said he didn't care as long as it was an energy efficient fluorescent bulb.

Dubya said, "Change?"

30. He could retire to Paraguay
and comingle with his grandfather's Nazi friends from the friendly confines of his new ranch. Thereafter the ICC can try him in absentia and the convicted war criminal he is will be confined to that ranch, never again to damage the United States nor wreak blood-dripping war on innocent people. I would be very happy if this were so.

There again we could be foolish
Not to quit while we're ahead
For distance lends enchantment
And that is why
All exiles are distinguished
More important they're not dead
I could find job satisfaction
In Paraguay
