Tester's base feeling confident

GREAT FALLS - Jon Tester started Tuesday morning as the farmer he is, chopping feed for his cattle. By Tuesday night, he was looking like he could be Montana's next U.S. senator.

“I felt in my gut for some time, that if we continued to do what we were doing, going out and talking to people about the issues that are important, that we'd be all right,” he said Tuesday evening from a hotel room in Great Falls, surrounded by a dozen family members chatting, eating and watching election returns on TV.

Tester, the Democrat challenging Republican U.S. Sen. Conrad Burns, had staked out an early lead in election returns Tuesday night.
