U.S. Baghdad Envoy Says Bush Still Committed to Iraq

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - The U.S. ambassador in Baghdad said on Wednesday President George W. Bush was still committed to success in Iraq and would work with Democrats after their congressional election gains to achieve it.
"Americans are prepared to continue to support Iraq as Iraqis take the needed steps,'' Zalmay Khalilzad said, in the first public comments by a senior U.S. official on Iraq since Bush's Republicans lost control of the House of Representatives in elections seen as a referendum on the war.
Seeking to reassure Iraqi leaders about a dramatic change in U.S. policy that could lead to an abrupt withdrawal of 150,000 American troops, Khalilzad said:
"The president is the architect of U.S. foreign policy. He is the commander in chief of our armed forces. He understands what's at stake in Iraq.
"He is committed to working with both houses of the American Congress to get support needed for the mission in Iraq to succeed,'' he told a reception attended by government officials, Iraqi legislators and embassy personnel....
