WASHINGTON - President Bush said Wednesday Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld is stepping down and former CIA Director Robert Gates will take over at the Pentagon and in prosecuting the war in Iraq.

Rumsfeld, architect of an unpopular war in Iraq, intends to resign after six stormy years at the Pentagon, Republican officials said.

The development occurred one day after midterm elections that cost Republicans control of the House, and possibly the Senate, as well. Surveys of voters at polling places said opposition to the war was a significant contributor to the Democratic victory.

1. Lieberman stays where he is in the Senate. Yes, he has the potential to be the deciding vote on many issues, but then so would Ben Cardin. Or Mark Pryor. Or Debbie Stabenow. It's a one-seat majority (yes, Jim Webb will win the re-tally in VA); any one Democrat can be "The Decider" in a straight up or down party-line vote. It's not just Holy Joe.

2. There are very few who would do worse than Rumsfeld. Holy Joe, frankly, had the potential to do worse. Possibly, Bob Gates could too. I just doubt it very seriously in either case.

This is my first post here and for the record I am a moderate democrat.
I am currently serving in the military and I am in Iraq.
I am glad that the President made the right decision and is willing to
start over. Richard Gates is a guy who worked for Bush 41 and can
bring a fresh perspective to the problems we are having in Iraq.

I don't think all of this name calling is going to help anything. We
have got to work together to get this problem fixed. We have got to get
things settled down in Iraq, and then give full control of the situation to
the Iraqi Police and Iraqi Army. All of this bickering is pointless.
Let's do the right thing and work together so that we can finish this and
bring our guys home.
