Kansas State University officials said Wednesday that Rumsfeld still would deliver the Landon Lecture on Thursday morning in Bramlage Coliseum as previously announced. As of Wednesday, 600 tickets were still available, though officials said interest among national media outlets had increased following President George W. Bush's announcement that Rumsfeld was stepping down.
Rumsfeld, described by Bush as the architect of the war in Iraq, is stepping down after six years in office amid growing opposition to the progress of the four-year war. Bush named former CIA Director Robert Gates to replace Rumsfeld.
While in Manhattan, Rumsfeld will attend the renaming of a building on the Kansas State campus for former Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Richard B. Myers, a Kansas native who teaches part-time at the university since retiring from the military.
