Democrats take control of the Senate
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061109/ap_on_el_se/democrats_senate

WASHINGTON - Democrats wrested control of the Senate from Republicans Wednesday with an upset victory in Virginia, giving the party complete domination of Capitol Hill for the first time since 1994.

Jim Webb's squeaker win over incumbent Sen. George Allen (news, bio, voting record) gave Democrats their 51st seat in the Senate, an astonishing turnabout at the hands of voters unhappy with Republican scandal and unabated violence in
Iraq. Allen was the sixth Republican incumbent senator defeated in Tuesday's elections.

The Senate had teetered at 50 Democrats, 49 Republicans for most of Wednesday, with Virginia hanging in the balance. Webb's victory ended Republican hopes of eking out a 50-50 split, with Vice President
Dick Cheney wielding tie-breaking authority.

82. Lieberman Can't Push Too Hard
In the 2008 elections, the Republicans are defending 21 seats, the Democrats are defending 12 seats (i.e. there's a major built-in advantage for the Dems to pick up more seats). If so, the Dems will no longer need Holy Joe... and can pay him back if he's too obnoxious in the next two years.

121. It's fortunate that ...
King George didn't replace Rummy with Joe LIEberman. That would have allowed Governor Rell to place a Republican appointee and bring the Senate back to 50-50 with Darth Cheney as the tie-breaker.

Karl must be having a bad week.

115. Actually, not a great title or name - Remember the reference to a "Macaca" is to someone of color &
the suggestion of "Harpooning a Macaca" is ugly....

Yes, it may be the philosophy of some racist ugly people, but it has no place here on the DU.

So, even the statement of "our redneck-free" philosophy has some incorrect implications - A) that the use of referring even to people as "Rednecks" is okay, but B) why would even a "Redneck-free" philosophy be to do exactly that of what the supposed "Rednecks" believe (ie. that they are racist and want to "Harpoon a Macaca".

Sorry AnnieBW - I think in an attempt to be cute and have a catchy tune, you actually wrote something that is racist.

Your call if you want to keep it....I personally think its exactly this kind of thing that should be rejected by us...think of it this way - Is that a tune that we should be singing to our 6 year old? Think about it... :hi:

Anybody notice how they kept plastering the pic of Bill Nelson's son all over the screen? He was arrested for a drunken display last night. They made it into a major news story. Pathetic and oh so comical at the same time. It was the only life-line they had to hold on to.

was between Democratic incumbent Glendening and Rethug challenger Ellen Sauerbrey.
She demanded a recount, which she got, then she demanded another, which she did not get.
We called her Sour Grapes after that.

As of January, 2006, she's been a bushbot UN rep.

Now I am going to sit back and enjoy my lukewarm wine.

59. SO HAPPY
We pretty much know were going to take the House, but most polls said we were probably not going to capture enough seats for the Senate.

WE DID IT. Thanks to all my fellow Democrats. And to the other side who so hated Bush that they voted Dem for the first time in their lives, or stayed home.

I have to say I have never seen such a mandate in my life. This country absolutely detests Bush and the NeoCons.

HAPPY DAYS.

127. yep, in order to get 51 votes, we probably need at least 55 or 56 "Dems" in
the Senate. I'm trying to be optimistic, but let's admit it - there's *always* some defectors: Landrieu, Nelson, Nelson, etc.

Still, at least now Dems get to head the committees.

139. That's exactly why we need
absolute, complete, filibuster, and veto proof majorities. We need to work towards a 435 seat house, a 100 seat senate, and a good liberal Dem president who will appoint Supreme Court justices that defend our constitution. Hopefully, this is the opening salvo on the ultimate death of the GOP.

I don't trust the memory cards, of course. But I'd also had some concerns about how data was centrally processed in Virginia. If a media outlet called all the localities, and got the information repeated separately, that clarifies the situation some.

of votes - just NOT QUITE ENOUGH! Too bad, so sad, you thieving Repugs...

And exit polls were off by 6-7% in Montana - again, just like in 2004, in all cases where the exit polls differed from the vote totals, it was ALWAYS in the Repugs favor, ie the Reps. did much better than expected. Hmmmmmm......

I wonder how many republicans voted our way.

Maybe NOT ONE republican came out, all GOP votes were due to election fraud, maybe BushCo didn't realize how many democrats would come out to vote and didn't fix the computers to spit out enough republican votes.

Maybe we would have won by a higher margin.

Dems complete election sweep of Congress

By LIZ SIDOTI and BOB LEWIS, Associated Press Writers 1 hour, 19 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - Democrats completed an improbable double-barreled election sweep of Congress on Wednesday, taking control of the Senate with a victory in Virginia as they padded their day-old majority in the House.

"The days of the do-nothing Congress are over," declared Democratic Sen. Harry Reid (news, bio, voting record) of Nevada, in line to become majority leader. "In
Iraq and here at home, Americans have made clear they are tired of the failures of the last six years."

Jim Webb's victory over Sen. George Allen (news, bio, voting record) in Virginia assured Democrats of 51 seats when the Senate convenes in January. That marked a gain of six in midterm elections in which the war in Iraq and
President Bush were major issues.

Earlier, State Sen. Jon Tester triumphed over Republican Sen. Conrad Burns (news, bio, voting record) in a long, late count in Montana.

With a handful of House races too close to call, Democrats had gained 28 seats, enough to regain the majority after 12 years of Republican rule and place Rep. Nancy Pelosi (news, bio, voting record) of California in line to become the first female speaker in history.

112. Congratulations Democrats
But you have your work cut out for you, so don't get complacent. Your party is still looking far too Republican for me, and I still stoutly believe in the dream of a strong, viable Green Party in these United States.

You are still wrong on many issues regarding the environment, and you still empower a callous elite as part and parcel of your leadership.

I want to see you consolidate your lead, but ultimately, I want my party to grow, which means we are going to eventually anger you all when we draw you down as we build our strength up and move to become a large major political party in the United States.

GO GREENS!

Rep. Charles Rangel (D-NY), "the incoming chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, told the New York Post that he's got his eye on Capitol Hill office space now held by Vice President Dick Cheney.

Said Rangel: "Mr. Cheney enjoys an office on the second floor of the House of Representatives that historically has been designated for the Ways and Means Committee chairman... I talked to Nancy Pelosi about it this morning... I'm trying to find some way to be gentle as I restore the dignity of that office."

But will he ever get that sulphurous stench out of it??:evilfrown:
