U.S. Army ad slogan shrinks by half

The U.S. Army on Thursday unveiled its new two-word $1 billion recruiting slogan, with "Army Strong" replacing "An Army of One."

The timing of the announcement coincides with Veterans Day and the new slogan will have a 5-year run, the Chicago Tribune reported.

The 5-year-old "An Army of One" was criticized by soldiers who claimed it was counter to what it meant to be in the Army. It replaced "Be All You Can Be," which ran for almost 20 years, the Tribune said.

The war in Iraq has been a bane for recruiters, who narrowly achieved a target of 80,000 enlistees this year, although they fell short of target in 2005.

Or is that too text-heavy?

Edited to add, maybe they figured "An Army of One" was a little too prescient, the way recruitment goals were going....

18. Ouch! You bad. Strong maybe. Very bad.
Even if it was an Army of one, Rummy would have gone to war with it. It would have been the Army he had, even if not the one he wanted.

3. The easiest way to improve recruitment is begin the pull out of Iraq
This little choice by the Army shows just how deep Bush's Manicheaism has reached.

11. It's not the system. It is the Republicans. They purged most of the smart people from top
positions. And they keep the smart ones from getting promotions. Only loyalist sychophants have been allowed to hold the top positions under Bush/Rumsfeld.

17. I agree that . . .
the rot has accelerated under the current regime. But, I think a case can be made that its roots go quite a bit farther back.

21. I hated "Army of One" - being an Army veteran - what an idiotic slogan.
And now "Army Strong?" What the hell is that? Just because the Air Force has a two-worder, doesn't mean the Army needs one. "Army Strong." Sounds like something an ingnoramus would say.

I used to like the "We do more before nine in the morning than most people do all day." And, "Be All You Can Be," was pretty inspiring. What's wrong with these people? If it works, don't fix it.

30. I not only worked at the ad agency that came up with Be All You Can Be
I worked for the copywriter! They never should have changed it--it's a classic slogan like Diamonds Are Forever (which also came out of that agency)

Of course, we had a sane commander-in-chief back then.
