An Allen-Santorum ticket. They got a lot of time on their hands to think up new and improved ways to destroy the country.

He hasn't been saying much at all. I don't blame him for waiting until the canvassing was done. The canvassing is part of VA state law. He isn't going to drag it out beyond this, and I will say good for him on that.

goosebumps again! So many times over the past 2 days, I have had goosebumps...first time was Strickland's announced victory and then Sherrod Brown's. Then the S. Dakota's cruelty of forcing women to carry rapists' children voted down....

now this. I feel such RELIEF!!! Like a huge burden has lifted and we can now work to solve the problems facing our country...I believe I heard the Statue of Liberty let out a huge sigh of relief yesterday!!!

46. oh hey neighbor
being in Tennessee is a bit of shame bearing, too.

We've been behind the times most of my life, so maybe in ten years? we'll have a progressive representative.

At least our new senator really hasn't got a clue, and he will really be in the minority. Wow - isn't that wonderful, the rest of the country has given us a majority in both houses, and ole Saxby and Lamar won't be in charge of anything!

I'm now a Democrat
Calling Georgia voters stupid is no way to convince them to come into the Democratic fold. To most Republicans your name calling is pure hypocrisy since the Dems pride themselves on open-mindedness and tolerance.

The only seat that I'm aware of in Georgia that was lost to a Republican was the Lieutenant Governor. If you look at all the other races, I think you'll see that on percentage points alone Georgia picked up more Democratic votes. I personally can't fathom why anyone would vote for a Republican. What have they possibly done to deserve re-election? I dunno.

I'm a native Georgian, born in raised in in Rome (NW part of the state). This election was my first time ever voting a straight Democratic ticket. I have never voted straight down party lines, but I did this time. I can't agree with Democrats on every issue, but I do stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Dems in preventing our Republic from turning into a dictatorship by having a Republican-led Congress that rubber-stamps anything Bush wants to do.

I guess I now consider myself a moderate Democrat.

* I do *not* believe in a war that at best was a mistake and at worse was criminal.
* I do *not* believe in profits over people. (Health care)
* I do *not* believe Bush should be given dictatorial powers by a congress that rubber-stamps everything he wants.
* I do *not* believe that my two gay neighbors marrying each other affects my life or anyone else's life in any way. The only people if affects is them, so why the hell not let 'em get married? The only arguments I've heard against gay marriage are religious ones, which frankly have no place in government.
* I understand that abortion is something that *I* may not agree with, but half of the country sees it otherwise. I respect their opinion.

You guys please don't give up on the South. I hope the Dems in the House and Senate don't forget about us and ignore us. Keep giving us reasons to vote for Democrats here.

And for God's sake quit the name-calling.

and I can't think of many I respect more than him. I don't think Dr. Dean plans on giving up in any state any time soon.

You're right: the argument "Well you're just stupid" has never changed anyone's opinions that I've ever heard of. I don't think there's any demographic that's "stupid" -- just some folks that are missing important information that they haven't gotten from their local media.

I see you've been here for a while, but in case no one's said it yet: Welcome to DU!

Edited on Thu Nov-09-06 11:44 AM by LibDemAlways
our high school days have been waiting for this for a long time - Allen's political career nipped in the bud. I started posting on DU years ago about what a racist idiot Allen was. I contacted Chuck Robb's people in 2000 with true tales of Confederate flags on license plates and racially-charged graffiti on school walls. I spoke with reporters.

In April of this year Ryan Lizza of The New Republic published two lengthy pieces detailing Allen's sordid racist past, and finally, finally Allen tripped up in public with his now-famous "macaca" utterance....and the dam broke as the mainstream whores began paying attention and people began coming forward with their recollections of a deer's head in a mailbox and repeated use of the "n" word.

Some of the most disgusting Allen stuff remained under wraps by the same whores who apparently didn't want to pile on a Republican. Allen's abuse of his siblings as documented by his sister went unreported as did his curious choice of Forrest, as in KKK founder Nathan Forrest, as the name chosen for his son, as did a bat inscribed with the words "n____r knocker" he was fond of showing to his high school classmates, as was the "eat shit whitey" he spraypainted on the walls of his school in a pathetic attempt to stir up racial tension against black kids from a rival school. Allen's history is definitely worse than what was commonly reported. And the election was still a bit too close for comfort - unless, of course, the tallies were rigged - but not by quite enough, as I suspect may have been the case.

Nevertheless, this is a great day. Allen's loss is not only a perhaps fatal blow to his Presidential ambitions, it signals a Democratic takeover of the Senate. What could be sweeter?

that we would not b bullied into conceding a race. Plus, out patience in this matter will make it easier to cry hypocrisy in the future if a Dem is narrowly behind.

let's not make us a bunch of Joe Liebermans (2000 version) here by wishing for a speedy end. He may have cost us the presidency then.

64. Webb's still ahead by over 6800 votes, with fewer than 120 conditional
precincts still uncounted. In most cases, these seem to have very few votes in them; for completely reporting independent cities, here are the numbers of allowed conditional votes:

07 - Charlottesville
28 - Chesapeake (split 50/50 A/W)
04 - Fairfax
01 - Fall Church
01 - Harrisonburg
01 - Petersburg
01 - Roanoke
01 - Salem
03 - Williamsburg
02 - Winchester

62. I say B.S.
This is just to avoid a re-count and to avoid having the national spotlight on the dirty election vote stealing going on in VA.

No big win here.

68. CNN: "Sources: Allen to concede, giving Senate control to Dems"

Sources: Allen to concede, giving Senate control to Dems

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Republican George Allen of Virginia will concede the election for his U.S. Senate seat to Democratic challenger Jim Webb Thursday, sources close to the senator said Thursday.

A victory for Webb will give the Democrats control of the Senate, as well as the House of Representatives.

Allen scheduled a news conference for 3 p.m. ET. Webb has scheduled an appearance with reporters at 4:15.

Even before any formal concession had been made, Republicans were resigned to facing a Democratic majority next year, one GOP member said Thursday.

"I think if you ask any Republican in Congress right now, they're working under the assumption that they'll be in the minority in both the House and the Senate," New Hampshire Sen. John Sununu told CNN.

In the last unsettled race of the 33 Senate contests on Tuesday's ballots, Allen trailed Webb, a former Secretary of the Navy, by 8,805 votes, the Virginia Board of Elections announced Thursday afternoon.

The gap grew from the roughly 7,200 votes Wednesday after 55 of Virginia's 134 electoral districts completed their canvasses of the results.

A Webb win would put the new Senate lineup at 49 Democrats, 49 Republicans and two independents -- Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Joe Lieberman of Connecticut -- who have said they would caucus with the Democrats. That would give the Democrats the 51 votes they need to claim a majority for the first time since 2001.

The gap between Webb and Allen -- once considered a 2008 presidential contender -- is about a third of 1 percent of the 2.3 million votes cast, making a recount a possibility. And Sununu said that if he were in Allen's position, he probably would seek a recount for everyone's peace of mind.

But he added, "The size of the margin is unlikely to change in any significant way."

"I think it is a margin that will probably hold up," he said.

Webb declared victory early Wednesday, and The Associated Press declared him the winner Wednesday night. CNN has not projected a winner in Virginia.

Democratic challengers knocked off five other Republican incumbents in Tuesday's Senate races and won 29 seats in the House of Representatives to claim control of that chamber for the first time since 1994.

75. It ain't his conceding that gives Dems control, dammit! Dems won control
by winning 6 Republican seats and holding all of their own. Georgie's conceding or not conceding does not change that.
