Evangelical Leader: GOP Abandoned Voters

By JENNIFER TALHELM
Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Conservative Christian leader James Dobson accused the Republican Party of abandoning values voters in the midterm elections - and paying the price by losing control of Congress. "What did they do with their power?" Dobson said in a statement. "Very little that values voters care about."

Finger-pointing abounded in the days after Democrats seized control of Congress after 12 years in the minority. Dobson, chairman of Focus on the Family, issued a statement railing against the Republicans for letting their majorities slip away.

"They consistently ignored the constituency that put them in power until it was late in the game, and then frantically tried to catch up at the last minute," said Dobson, who argued that religious conservatives ensured GOP wins in 2004.

Dobson also criticized other conservatives, including former Majority Leader Dick Armey, R-Texas - an architect of the 1994 GOP House takeover - for complaining recently that the religious right was "too involved" with the party.

30. Yes, exactly.
Neo cons were NEVER going to overturn Roe v. Wade or amend the Constitution to ban gay marriage. Those are their key areas to trick and trap those stupid fundies. If neo cons actually DID those things, they'd lose their wedge issues.

8. I think it was just the opposite....
the GOP pandered to the religious right and it didn't help. In spite of what Dobson may think this country is not filled with Evangelical fanatics. The reasonable citizens of this country finally stood up to be heard and I am so proud of them.

11. Abandoned prostitution, pedophilia, ignorance and hate?
The cornerstones of the values voters. Don't think so jim, there are as many perverts in the gop as there remains in focus on the family. Ya'll just got to get along a little better. Give it up dobson; take one for the team. I bet you can find someone real close to you to pound your nasty ass right now; and afterwards ya'll will reaffirm your commitment to the gop (Gaggle of Perverts.)

16. ha hah.

Dobson's campaign to rally Christian Right voters during October in the Senate race states flopped spectacularly. And Focus On The Family has been losing 'members' and net laying off people for a year and half because the money coming in has fallen off so drastically since 2004.

Whether the GOP is dragging down the Christian Right or the Christian Right is dragging down the GOP is one of those false choice academic questions the Right's 'intellectuals' can debate for decades. The GOP collapse is preceding the Christian Right implosion, but not by much.

It's simply that times have changed; just enough of the right half of the political spectrum has finally decided it can and wants to live in the world as it is, not in denial of it anymore.

The Rethugs PRETENDED to embrace you because they wanted your votes. With them, EVERYTHING is just a means to one of their ends. And they'd STILL be doing it if they hadn't gotten caught.

25. Dr. Dobson doesn't realize that his group caused a huge split
in the GOP with people who were fiscally conservative but socially moderate. The GOP would do well to run away from these people.

We've been trying to tell you guys that for 6 years, but nooooooooo! you woulddn't listen.

First there's the "What's the matter with Kansas" issue of how you guys bought the neo con bullshit hook line and sinker.

Second, could not your own party, the party of pedophilia, meth and pay for sex had some small influence?

29. "Values voters?" What an old chestnut that is...
Quaint. I say that there were actually real "values voters" in 2006 and they voted the GOP out. They stand for pro-life - defending the welfare of those born against the bestializing, anti-human policies of the Republicans.
