German neo-Nazis attack Jewish memorial

Nov 10, 2006 — BERLIN (Reuters) - German neo-Nazis, some shouting "Sieg Heil," rampaged in the eastern city of Frankfurt on Oder and destroyed wreaths placed to mark the anniversary of the 1938 Nazi pogrom against the Jews, police said on Friday.

A police spokeswoman said the group had launched an attack on Thursday evening, shortly after a memorial service by community and Jewish leaders at a monument where a synagogue once stood.

The neo-Nazis trampled floral wreaths placed at a memorial stone to the synagogue in the city on the Polish border that was destroyed 68 years ago in the Nazis' Kristallnacht, or "Night of Broken Glass," police said.

They threw away candles left at the memorial ceremony, which had been attended by about 200 people. When police arrived, some of the neo-Nazis shouted "Sieg Heil."

1. That's really so sad, but the east is where
the Neo-Nazi's seem to be gaining power.

Reunification hasn't been good to that half of the nation; so, while those in the East languish in a rotten economic situation, Neo-Nazis are gaining some momentum and are being a little more brash about what they're doing. I believe one of the Southeastern states has actually seen a political party affiliated with them get some political power.

2. Hatred of Jews is actually a very common and growing . .
. . influence these days - throughgout the world.

You might visit our I/P forum where this topic is frequently discussed - to get a better feeling of the extent and pervasiveness of these anti-semitic views in our society.

3. It's going to be hard for someone to claim the Jews were really behind this one.
Every time a synagogue or cemetery gets vandalized I always see someone come out and claim the Jews did it to garner attention or sympathy. I guess it won't happen in this case.

7. Relax, they shot themselves in the hobnail boots
Edited on Fri Nov-10-06 06:37 PM by Ferret Mike
They damaged their own cause, marginalizing the crap out of it by doing the same sort of hateful and intolerant reactionary violence as happened on 'the Hight of the Broken Glass' in 1938.

It would make them martyrs and neutralize their self inflicted damage to shoot them.

I would also add that they should have the right of assembly and free speech to say their piece and peacefully demonstrate if they desire.

Our Constitution is stronger for having those rights guaranteed. It is the ramifications and personal responsibility for one's speech and associations that make those rights work.

10. But that's in Germany, not the USA
In Germany, neo-Nazis do not have any right to freedom of speech. Anything connected with Nazis or Nazism was banned in that country, for obvious reasons.

It's so sad that the German language will always remind people of Hitler...an entire people and their culture, forever stained by that unspeakably evil bastard. And to think there are still people who idolize that demon from hell makes me want to vomit.

14. Those laws create the 'forbidden fruit' fascination
They should trust the power of the responsibility to speak and act civilly and the negative ramifications of acting or sounding like a Nazi bastard to deal with the problem

Here is some agro Berlin crap that is on youtube. com from a German rap group called mahatmahitler which is showing up on 'myspot' pages in the United States, You speak German, I am very curious as to what they are saying. I hear them saying "Adolf," but I only speak English and French.

18. I don't understand everything
Edited on Mon Nov-13-06 06:28 AM by mare
because they are rapping way too fast even for me as a native. But from what I'm understanding they are rapping against other German rappers and they inviting those rappers to a join a "battle". When they mention Hitler it's because they are saying "Mahatmahitler ein Spaßprojekt?" which would roughly translate to English as "Mahatmahitler, a project just for fun?" Their language seems to be very crude but there is nothing racist in it and at no point do I hear anything about "Adolf".

It might be intersting to know that Germany has a huge and commercially successful Hip Hop tradition that goes back to the 1980s.

eta:
Also, I don't even think the groups name is racist in the slightest. They are just using the names of total opposites: "Mahatma" (Ghandi), a man of peace, and Hitler the mass-murderer.

13. Of course not
attacking muslims is the bigotry that's proud to speak its name, as Nick Griffin has realised over here.

which is deeply untrivial, but...

the wisecracker in me thought, upon seeing the headline, "So this is what Rumsfeld is up to in retirement?"

16. I kinda think
seeing something funny in a situation like this is a natural thing. Like whistling through a graveyard. Or even the jokes we make about Bush while he seemingly tries to end the world.
