Chicago Subway Evacuated for Rail Damage

CHICAGO (AP) - Dozens of passengers were evacuated from a subway train Friday after a section of the electrified third rail was damaged and officials turned off power so they could investigate.

Firefighters escorted about 100 people from the train, which was underground between Red Line stations just north of the downtown, said fire department spokesman Richard Rosado.

There were no reports of injuries, although ambulances were waiting as a precaution, he said.

Officials weren't immediately sure what damaged the track. Chicago Transit Authority spokeswoman Ibis Antongiorgi said they turned off power so they could safely investigate and make sure all the passengers were safe. In the meantime, the trains were rerouted over elevated tracks.
