Military service linked to Lou Gehrig's disease (Gulf War Double Risk)
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15656054/

Military service, particularly in the Gulf War, may be linked to development of Lou Gehrig’s disease, the Institute of Medicine said Friday.

The evidence, however, is limited and inconsistent, the Institute said.

The degenerative nerve disease, formally known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, gradually destroys the ability to control movement. Patients lose their ability to move or speak, but their minds remain unaffected. Most victims die of respiratory failure within a few years.

According to the report, released as Veterans Day was being observed, five studies have been done on the subject.

Three indicated a higher rate of ALS among veterans of the 1990-91 Gulf War, one found a link to veterans who served prior to that war and one found no link at all.

4. I went to see Flags of our Fathers a couple of nights ago; it is an
indictment of war and of Bush. Very similar war scenes to opening 20 minutes of Saving Private Ryan. Speilberg was a producer along with Clint Eastwood.

5. It all goes back to depleted uranium
Something our news sources are not reporting. A recent report lists the deaths of Veterans since the Gulf War at over 11,000 and 56% of them are now disabled with various health problems. And the percentage of deformed babies born to vets after their return is through the roof.

6. DU Death Toll Tops 11,000
By the year 2000, there were 325,000 on permanent medical disability.

And for some reason, the media is being mute on this subject.

8. According to info on the ALS Association website,
"an extremely high incidence of ALS was observed in Guam and the Trust Territories of the Pacific in the 1950's"...enough to acknowledge a third form of the disease.

With the military presence in Guam at that time, you can't help wondering.

11. I knew a veteran who died of ALS
He served in the Gulf War, I believe. He was a proud veteran, very Christian, socially conservative, and I'm sure he would have voted for W in 2000, and probably even in 2004.

He could not talk, eat, or even breathe on his own. He communicated by miniscule finger movements on a keyboard. His wife understood his slight facial and eye movements. He needed constant, complete care, for every bodily function. He was at risk of dying anytime his breathing tube clogged up with mucus.

I did not know him when he was able bodied, but I think his disease might have made him more religious, because he relied on his belief in Jesus to get him through each day.
