Bush: Vote doesn't signal U.S. weakness

By TERENCE HUNT, AP White House Correspondent 56 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - After arguing during the campaign that Democrats would undermine national security,
President Bush changed course Saturday and said America's enemies should not read this week's ground-shaking election results as a sign of U.S. weakness.

Four days after voters threw Republicans from power in the House and Senate, Bush used his weekly radio address to issue a call for unity.

"The message of this week's elections is clear: The American people want their leaders in Washington to set aside partisan differences, conduct ourselves in an ethical manner and work together to address the challenges facing our nation," the president said. "This is important work that will demand the hard effort and good faith of leaders from both sides of the aisle, and I pledge to do my part."

With two years remaining in his presidency, Bush is trying to keep the nation focused on the global war on terror and prevent a pullout of U.S. forces from Iraq before victory is achieved.

4. It is amazing, isn't it...
...how GWB flips and flops but the label never attaches to him.

I do not attribute it to the stupidity of the American people (well, of course, some of them are) so much as to the depredations of a bought and paid for corporate media. After all, most people do not obsess on politics the way that we do here. They get their information from mainstream sources, and they trust those sources, still believing in the fiction of our American Free Press. Most Americans are not aware that our so-called free press is the laughing stock of the world right now. And their trust has been betrayed by a media that cynically propagandizes them and manipulates their opinions shamelessly.

We really do have to figure out how to combat this.

And by the way, I am proud once again that the American people, however belatedly, kicked the Republican bums out in spite of the onslaught of misinformation and downright lies coming at them nonstop for the last 6 years. Good on them / good on us! Here's hoping it is the start of a Blue Wave so big, that the unholy alliance of NeoCons, FuncyCons and XenoCons will die for once and for all, leaving behind a residue of actual conservatives to provide honest opposition.

3. Like our enemies thought it was a sign of weakness.
Bush insults Democrats and everyone's intelligence again. The truth is plain for all to see. Bush's presidency has been a weakness for the United States. Not just weakness, disease.

7. Media keeps reminding us what Pelosi called Bush but not this(last par):
During the campaign, Bush had particularly harsh words about the Democrats and their commitment to winning the war on terror. For example, the president said in the closing days of the race: "The Democrat approach in Iraq comes down to this: The terrorists win and America loses. That's what's at stake in this election. The Democrat goal is to get out of Iraq. The Republican goal is to win in Iraq."

8. Bush: Voting in Democrats lets the terrorists win--said so Oct. 30 in GA
http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2006/10/20061030-4.html

<snip>
Last week, a senator, a Democrat senator explained her party's position this way. She said: We haven't coalesced around a single plan, but we're in general agreement on basic principles. She's right; the agreement -- they are in agreement on one thing -- they will leave before the job is done. That's what they're in agreement on. (Applause.) They've come up with a lot of creative ways to describe leaving Iraq before the job is done. Sometimes they say, immediate redeployment. Sometimes they say they wouldn't spend another dime on our troops. Sometimes they say the idea that we're going to win this war is an idea that unfortunately is just plain wrong. However they put it, the Democrat approach in Iraq comes down to this: The terrorists win and America loses.

You can't unring a bell, Chimpy.

SELLERSBURG, Ind., Oct. 28 — In an appearance that amounted to his first traditional campaign rally of the election season, President Bush on Saturday told wildly cheering supporters here that Democrats did not want to investigate, prosecute or even detain terrorists and had no plan for Iraq.

Bush: Terror Fight Unchanged by Election Results
By Scott Stearns
White House
11 November 2006

U.S. President George Bush says America's fight against terrorism will not be affected by this past week's election in which his political party's lost control of Congress. Opposition Democrats vow to continue that fight, but with some changes.

President Bush speaks at the Veterans Days
ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery

On the day Americans set aside to honor their military veterans, President Bush thanked those men and women in uniform for defending freedoms that include the right to choose their leaders at the ballot box, even in a time of war.

After his Republican Party lost control of Congress in Tuesday's vote, Mr. Bush met with leaders of the opposition Democratic Party and vowed to work together. "The elections will bring changes to Washington. But one thing has not changed: America faces brutal enemies who have attacked us before and want to attack us again," said Mr. Bush. "I have a message for these enemies: Do not confuse the workings of American democracy with a lack of American will. Our nation is committed to bringing you to justice, and we will prevail."

In his weekly radio address, the president said he looks forward to hearing from new congressional leaders about their ideas for supporting U.S. troops in the fight against terrorism. He also reflected on the resignation of Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld who many Democrats and some Republicans blame for what has gone wrong in Iraq.

Bush signals change in Iraq policy

Sat Nov 11, 2006 10:47 AM ET

By Claudia Parsons

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - President Bush said on Saturday his chosen new defense secretary was an "agent of change" in a sign of the growing momentum for a new direction in Iraq policy after election defeat for Bush's Republicans.

Two car bombs in a Baghdad market killed eight people and Iraqi security forces were the target of several attacks around the country on Saturday as insurgents and sectarian groups kept up the pressure on the Iraqi government and its U.S. backers.

The Pentagon's top general, Peter Pace, has said U.S. military leaders are preparing to recommend changes in Iraq strategy. The Iraq Study Group, led by Bush family friend and former Secretary of State James Baker and former Congressman Lee Hamilton, is also looking at alternative approaches.

...

"He has experience leading large and complex organizations, and he has shown that he is an agent of change," Bush said in a weekly radio address. "He will provide a fresh outlook on our strategy in Iraq, and what we need to do to prevail."

23. Possibly.
But remember ... "stay the course" and "change the course" aren't antonyms. Or at least aren't antonyms for many people, and weren't antonyms until recently.

I'm fairly sure * hasn't committed to the antonym of "stay the course", which is "leave the course before finishing".

Last meeting they held resulted in no change in action, but ironically, they would stop saying 'stay the course' even though they weren't going to change course.
