Editor Found Dead in Mexican Hotel Room
ZIHUATANEJO, Mexico (AP) - A newspaper editor was found dead in a hotel room in this Pacific resort city, a day after running stories about organized crime and corruption in the city government.

Misael Tamayo Hernandez, editor of El Despertar de la Costa, was found early Friday nearly naked, with his hands tied behind his back, in a room at the Venus Motel, Zihuatanejo police officials said.

He was lying on a bed, covered only with a sheet, and investigators found three puncture marks on his body, one in his right hand and two others in a forearm. The cause of death was a heart attack, forensic investigators said.

Tamayo Hernandez, who was well-respected in the local journalism community, published a story on Thursday alleging that city officials gave illegal discounts on water services to individuals and businesses. The same edition also contained stories on organized crime.

2. In Mexico, they assassinate. In the US, they character assassinate.
Although, I think they are still very capable of assassination in the US.

so mundane...just a blip on the radar of life, so to speak, and not really murder.

6. Yup. Everyone ultimately dies of heart failure. That must be what
meant.

9. I am so sorry to hear this! Courageous journalists are a rare breed these
days, and a precious resource. When one of them goes down, we lose more than just the person. We lose free speech. We lose free access to information. We lose essential democratic tools for maintaining fairness and lawfulness. The loss ripples through the journalistic community like an ice wind, and makes us all afraid.

And I am so sorry for Misael Tamayo Hernandez, and what he suffered, and for his family and their loss. Please know that his courage and devotion to truth are greatly appreciated here.

I cannot help but think of the journalist recently killed in Oaxaca, Brad Will, who died bringing us live footage of his assassins--in another case of violent, fascist suppression (this time by rightwing state government paramilitaries, bent on suppressing the huge Oaxaca peoples' uprising).

What kind of government are these corporatists, Fox/Calderon, running--with fascist assassins running around, free to punish criticism with death, and also kidnapping and torture? I think it suits them too well to have people living in fear, and honest journalists silenced forever.

11. Zihuatanejo is
the little place sought out at the end of the film "The Shawshank Redemption."

After escaping Shawshank prison Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) goes there to restart his life. From the Stephen King novella... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Shawshank_Redemption

Y'know, just parenthetically adding this....

15. I was there for a week about two years ago
...Maybe three. Really loved the Z, seemed like more of a vacation spot for the rest of Mexico than foreigners like myself.

Everyplace has its dark side, I guess. :(
