'IBD' Hits Rep. Conyers As 'Islamist' Tool, Hails Rumsfeld as 'Great'
http://www.editorandpublisher.com/eandp/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003381094

The conservative business publication, Investor's Business Daily, isn't taking this week's elections results in stride. In a blistering editorial, the newspaper charges that Rep. John Conyers, soon to chair the House Judiciary Committee, is "leading a Democrat jihad to deny law enforcement key terror-fighting tools" and "is in the pocket of Islamists."

Proof for this? Conyers, whose district in Michigan holds a large Arab-Amercian population, has a version of his Web site in Arabic and allegedly "does the bidding of these new constituents and the militant Islamist activists who feed off them." More "evidence": Conyers opposes the Patriot Act and has called for the president's impeachment.

... Donald Rumsfeld, on the other hand, is "a great defense chief and a great man, and deserves a lot better," a Friday editorial noted. He couldn't help it if "chaos is endemic to the Arabic culture, of which Iraq is a part." Rumsfeld's approval rating in a Newsweek poll released Saturday stands at 24% -- seven points less than the president's.

And as for recently defeated Republican Senator Lincoln Chafee: According to IBD, he "thinks defeat at the polls gives him license to spend his remaining weeks in office wrecking U.S. foreign policy. It's a final outrage from a traitor to party and president."

14. IBD has always been a right wing tool.
This kind of an us-or-them editorial is not new for them,
but they used write them more professionally than this.
The IBD article invokes invective, hysteria, and racism
more worthy of the Free Republic than of a publication
written for grown-ups.

21. Is Editor and Publisher a subsidiary of IBD?
I could find no such editorial in Investors Business Daily web sites. This very poorly written article by staff(?) of Editor and Publisher is anti-Arab racist garbage.

24. The Nov. 9 editorial is on IBD's web site.
I won't post a link because of the racist content,
but it was very easy to find with Google.

Current articles in IBD's editorial page have the same
right wing slant but with a less strident tone.

22. Hardly 'thinly veiled racism'. More like blatant
racism. I would like to see the original editorial from Investors Business Daily. I suspect IBD didn't even write such an editorial. I could be wrong, I am not familiar with either publications and don't know what the relationship is between the two. The article is so poorly written it appears to be written by amateurs bent on spreading racism against Arab-Americans.

16. Ugh, what's with accusations that Arab-Americans in Michigan are terrorist threats?
Edited on Sat Nov-11-06 10:51 PM by AliceWonderland
Ugh! That's the second time I've seen that accusation voiced in a paper in a week or so. Not that this guy is worth listening to... but the suggestion that Arab-Americans are traitors to the homeland is repugnant.

On edit: Oh, now I remember where else I've seen this lately:

http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/news/stories.nsf/stlouiscitycounty/story/CC8578ABC09530A2862572190018B734?OpenDocument

Clippard said that Muslims were hoping to take over the United States government one city at a time, and that they were starting with Detroit, where there is already a large Muslim population.

"They are trying to establish a Muslim state inside America, and they are going to take the city of Detroit back to the 15th century and practice Sharia (or Islamic) law there."

30. Of course this will be a main plank in the RNC mantra . .
Edited on Sun Nov-12-06 12:30 PM by msmcghee
. . applied to any and all Dems whenever possible in the coming months. It's the same old "Dems weak on defense" meme that's been firmly implanted in the American psyche for over fifty years - by savvy puke PR and the ususal MSM dupes and toadies. Here's why it may result in a return of the Republicans to both congress and the presidency in 2008.

Memes don't weaken from spending time in one's brain - they get stronger.

That meme lost us the 2004 election. The reason is - it was still too close to 9/11/01 and even with Bush showing incompetence and lying to the American people - enough voters decided not to take a chance on "weak Dems" with American GI's at risk on the ground in Iraq and Afghanistan. They allowed Bush to stay in power.

I submit that we made significant gains this election cycle for one reason only - there were no Islamist terrorists attacks on US soil. If you think voters use their intellect to make these decisions - then you'd expect them to vote for the Repukes - who had apparently protected us from those attacks.

But voters make such decisions emotionally. No attacks? Well, then there must not be so much danger from terrorism (voters not feeling fear) - therefore, Wow! Look at all that corruption and hypocrisy in our (Republican) government.

But, imagine what happens if another terrorist strike anything like 9/11 is successfully carried out sometime between now and election day 2008. That fear of terrorism emotion will be right back at the top of the list shoving everything else over the side. And the "Dems weak on terrorism" meme will find itself called back to important duty in our decision-making center - down there at the base of our voters' mammalian brain.

Yes it seems unfair - but when we get attacked voters will associate that with whoever is in power. When we don't get attacked - voters will . . really not give a damn. Like I said, it doesn't make sense - it's emotions.

What to do? IMO Dems should make their first priority taking as strong a hand as possible in doing things that will make us safer from terrorism - and those hearings, bills, conferences, study groups, whetever - should be as visible as possible to voters. It wouldn't hurt if they also happen to ruthlessly expose the amazing incompetence of the current administration while they're at it. And wherever they screwed up, we must hold them accountable with a serious but steadfast vengeance. To do any less than that will only reinforce the "weak Dem" meme. We'd be better off avoiding the subject if we instead, start singing Kumbaya with them.

We must be smart, effective, proactive and especially tough on terrorism now that we have the power to do that. That would make all the sense in the world even if were not facing a crucial presidential electon in less than two years now - but now we can start to kill that popular old meme that still has the power to drown us if things go bad. We can start to replace it with a new one that says Dems are both smart and tough when it comes to defending American lives - and voters would be foolish to ever entrust our safety to incompetent, partisan fools again.
