Inhofe Attacks Children’s Book on Global Warming

Inhofe Attacks Children’s Book on Global Warming

Tore and the Town on Think Ice CoverJames Inhofe, the outgoing chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Works committee, is spending his last days in power attacking a children’s book on climate change. The book, published by the United Nations in March, is “based on the theme of climate change and on what children can do to mitigate effects of climate change.” Inhofe’s staff breathlessly notes, “The book features colorful drawings and large text to appeal to young children.”

Inhofe claims the book conveys inaccurate information about climate change to children. Actually, it’s Inhofe’s press release that’s inaccurate. Here’s an example:

“The morning after his dream, Tore sets out on a quest for knowledge about the dangers of catastrophic manmade global warming. A “snowy owl” informs Tore that “the planet’s heating up” and that both the Arctic and Antarctica “are warming almost twice as fast as elsewhere.”

So, Inhofe claims Antarctica is gaining ice. There is only one study that examined all of the ice sheet on Antarctica. The study was published this March and, using NASA satellites, found, “The Antarctic ice sheet is losing as much as 36 cubic miles of ice a year.”

Some right-wing groups have used a study by Curt Davis to claim Antarctica is gaining ice. But Davis’ study only looked at the interior of the continent. Since global warming leads to more precipitation, increased snow on the interior of Antarctica is consistent with climate change. In June, Davis told ThinkProgress that using his study to claim Antarctica is gaining ice is “completely wrong.”

What insanity.

Email the idiots from the EPW who have been and continue to waste your tax $'s on this PR campaign.

EDIT: the email addresses don't work. Figures.

My email:

I have no doubt that you two, along with Mr. Inhofe, will rot in Hell.
Enjoy.

Classy, huh?

2. Inhofe will soon be an irrelevancy
Which doesn't mean he can work a little mischief on his way out the door, proving that he has no conscience, no class and no integrity. Trifecta!

The sooner this de-evolved lungfish slithers back into the primordial electoral ooze, the better for all of us.

8. Yep, Big Jim is a knuckle-dragging dumb-ass.
Okie Fundies love him, but who ever accused those folks of having any sense? He's up for re-election in 2008. Please Oklahoma Democrats, field a candidate! The man's a foaming-at-the-mouth idiot! We can beat him.

There's been speculation Brad Henry will run in '08. Either him or Drew Edmondson. Both could beat him, especially Henry who has the ability to raise a crap load of cash to do it.

24. My letter to this bozo
Dear Senator Inhofe,

As an Oklahoman and a constituent I’m finding your obsession with global warming increasingly tiresome. Most recently you targeted a children’s book of all things.

You are not a scientist. You are not an expert. And as someone who has essentially had their entire political career bought and paid for by the oil and gas industry, you are light years away from being objective on this subject. In your case the old political axiom “follow the money” rings true.

Your continual focus on this issue makes all of us in this great state look like a bunch of anti-science rubes.

I'm fairly confident ranting and raving about children's books and an obsession for one single issue is not what the people of this state sent you to Washington for. Surely there are more pressing matters you could be attending to. Perhaps something relevant to Oklahomans?

Speaking for a number of Republicans and centrist Democrats I know, many of whom voted for you and donated to your past campaigns, 2008 cannot come soon enough.

12. He gets more than almost any other Senator.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Inhofe :
Only Texas senator John Cornyn received more campaign donations from the oil and gas industry in the 2004 election cycle. <15> The contributions Inhofe has received from the energy and natural resource sector since taking office have exceeded one million dollars.<16>

10. Thank you,God, that this cretin will soon be as useless as used
toliet paper. One more reason to be sure that the dems remain in power after '08. I'll be glad to give as much as the dems in power want within reason. The consequences of the Pugs regaining control are so serious that thinking of the possibility sends a very frigid shill down my spine.

17. Yup, Okie here, and he is unbelievably ignorant
As we Dems in OK have wondered for years how these odd balls keep getting elected, well, I have no answer, or at least one for print. Maybe a civil answer is that they only vote for the R by the name!

19. What I'm really curious about though...
is not what you think of him. Being a DU member I'm sure you understand the truth of Global Warming.

I'm more interested in knowing what the majority of the OK population thinks of him. What's the general feeling about him there?

22. Inhof is never really discussed except in ads and the
only newspaper in my area, the Oklahoman, which I cannot bear to read, pure repub hype. Most people I know are repubs and we don't talk much politics. They describe the dems as wanting to spend all their tax dollars on give-aways. They believe the war is justified since they believe it will let those terrorists know we will not weaken to their threats (that type of logic). In other words "just blow them up" type people, red necks even if they are professionals and taxes are probably the biggest issue. So again, if there is and R by their name than that's the candidate for them. Lately there have been grumblings from them concerning bush's blunders, they finally noticed. They even re-elected our Dem. Governor, Brad Henry. Course we sent another repub. to the House.

When Coburn ran for the Senate against Dem. Brad Carson in 04, he was a Rhodes Scholar and quite impressive, Coburn had ads against him saying he was weak on terror, liked taxes, the usual. Carson was almost too conservative for me, but, lordy, he got my vote. Brad's bunch tried to tell people that Dr. Coburn wasn't as right to life believer as he claimed since he had performed a procedure on a woman after she gave birth that prevented her from having more kids without telling her or getting approval, sorta forget the details, but people decided that the good Dr. did the right thing. I believe the woman might have been a charity case. Religion, Taxes, Abortion are biggies here. What can I say?

20. We just defeated a lot of the worst anti-environmentalists in Congress, but this
asshole is one of the worst... how can ANYONE (yeah, I know, they're out there) still think global warming is a myth or a fantasy propagated by some weirdo 'extreme' environmentalist hippie commies? Just for one thing, Mr. Inhofe, why in the F*** would we WANT that to be true?!?! Do you think WE enjoy it?

I read that in first grade in 1991 when the environmental movement was heating up. (no pun intended)

I think I still have it somewhere, too. Maybe it's worth a glance as the GOP War on Science continues.
