CNN: Giuliani Takes First Step Toward '08 Presidential Bid (also has poll information)
Edited on Tue Nov-14-06 02:38 AM by Silvermint
http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/11/13/giuliani.president/index.html

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, known for his apt leadership after the attacks of September 11, 2001, took the first step toward a possible 2008 presidential bid by forming an exploratory committee.

Giuliani has not officially decided whether to run, said committee treasurer John Gross in a statement.

"We have taken the necessary legal steps so an organization can be put in place and money can be raised," Gross said. (Watch how Giuliani will be pondering a presidential run "quite a bit" -- 1:44)

A document from the New York Department of State says Giuliani made the initial filing Friday.

Paperwork filed with the department said the committee's purpose is "to conduct federal 'testing-the-waters' activities under the Federal Election Campaign Act."

...

Giuliani didn't run for New York's open governorship this year or challenge Clinton in the Senate, which has fueled speculation he is considering a run for the White House in 2008.

According to a recent CNN poll, Giuliani is a favorite among Republican voters or independents who lean Republican.

The survey, conducted October 27-29 by Opinion Research Corp., indicates 29 percent of Republican voters would "most likely" support Giuliani for their party's presidential nomination in 2008. (Read the full poll results)

Runners-up included Sen. John McCain, with 27 percent, and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, with 12 percent. The poll of 401 Republican leaning voters had a sampling error of plus or minus 5 percent.

*****

Note: The headline on the abovelinked paged has been changed to "Giuliani Takes First Step Toward '08 Presidential Bid", although the link from the CNN homepage still reads "Giuliani Announces '08 Presidential Bid." It seems as if the former headline is, in fact, more accurate, but for now I'll stick with the one people see on the homepage.

Update: I've changed the headline to the one that appears on the page itself, instead of the one serving as the link on the CNN homepage.

2. Aren't his 15 minutes of fame up yet?

This is one political career that should have ended years ago.

I am absolutely revolted with how he has used the deaths of 3000 New Yorkers to launch a presidential campaign. There is no chance in hell he'd ever be considered a presidential candidate without 9/11.

Both he and McCain are completely loathsome individuals and I want to them both go down HARD.

4. Did he find bin Laden?
Did he arrest the terrorists?
Did he save any of those that died in the crash?
Did he go into the tower to lead out the survivors?

What has he done since 9/11?
Did he find another mistress?
Is he still married?
Why does he want to be president? So he can have all of his mistresses live with him in the White House?

5. I think you nailed it
His "apt leadership" on 9/11 basically amounted to restraining himself from running around in circles screaming "omfg we're all going to die!" I'm inspired, aren't you?

6. I guess Giuliani seemed pretty presidential...

...when you compare his reaction to Dubya Gump's. That isn't really saying much, however

15. Don't forget
about the bill he submitted for his gal friend's work, don't remember what it was for! It was during the 911 mess. Anyone can stand around and look at the mess, same as * did. Oh yes they were just wonderful!:puke:

19. Many have done a better job then Rudy did when confronted
with disaster.

Mayor Pat Owens did an excellent job in managing the flood disaster in Grand Forks, ND. Not everyone is cut out to deal with disasters but there are plenty of leaders that are able to step in and take charge of the situation. Rudy is not one of the few. He just happened to be there because of the job. Very few of the past mayors of New York would had failed shamelessly in managing the disaster on 9/11. Rudy is not a cut above everyone else.

It's easy to cut and run like Bush did flying to the middle of the country to hide out.

before they can his behind. They're on a mission and it could never be led by R*dy G. I don't think even McC*in has enough bona fides.

10. I agree
we may see the republicans eat their own in 2008. Centrist republicans will be torn between McCain and Rudy, while freeper republicans despise them both. This could make for some interesting fireworks.

11. Liked I noted at the end of my post,
I was unsure how to handle the discrepency between the headline on the page itself and the link headline on CNN's homepage. Since you're the first person to weigh in however, I'll proceed to change it now. ;)

after the attacks, i.e. the removal and melting down of the WTC steel that undoubtedly held definitive clues to what caused the massive beams to buckle and/or melt? . . .

16. This is going to be good...
The love triangle with Donna Hanover and now-Mrs. Giuliani was daily tabloid stuff. His ineptitude pre-911 has been documented in a book. His recommended friend whats-his-name Homeland Security guy was pretty corrupt.

I don't know what on earth Rudy is thinking to drag all this public laundry in public!!!

Bring out the popcorn!!!

18. This New Yorker doesn't have Amnesia
and fully remembers what Rudolph Giuliani was like before 9/11. No, I definitely would not vote for him.

If you liked corruption and "my way or the highway" under the Chimp, then you will just LOVE Rudy.

20. So we have Giuliani, McCain, and Gingrich running for pres
The GOP could have done worse, but that would have been hard considering who the front-runners are.
