Amusing-Former Gov.Huckabee Defends 'Wedding' Gift Registry
Edited on Tue Nov-14-06 04:05 PM by chimpsrsmarter
(AP) Gov. Mike Huckabee on Tuesday angrily defended a gift registry that was set up to help furnish his new home, and said the registry was put together by his wife's friends for a housewarming party.

"My wife has friends; she has lifelong friends. They wanted to do something for her," the Arkansas Republican told reporters after speaking at an event in downtown Little Rock. "It has nothing to do with who she is, other than she's their friend."

Huckabee has been mentioned as a possible candidate for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination and has made trips to several important primary states.

3. What the heck is a "covenant marriage"?
Something the Fundies made up to make themselves somehow more "married" than the rest of us? I am familiar with most of their silly rituals, but this one has me stumped.

6. Thanks for the education
I'm glad I live in one of those states that rejected the concept! Sounds like a lot of fundie crapola to me. I seem to remember voting against this sometime in the past 10 years.

The irony here based on recent headlines--if abuse, commission of a felony or adultery are the only grounds for dissolving a covenant marriage, seems like a lot of right-wingers are at risk of getting a divorce!

13. If you say "I really really mean it" three times without crossing your fingers
behind your back then it's a covenant marriage. Both of you say that and then spit into your palms and rub your palms together while doing a tongue and tonsil dance. Then the two of you sing a duet of "I've Got You Babe" to each other and that's it! You now have a covenant marriage. Actually I made up the part about the duet. But it seems like a nice touch.

5. I'll bet NO ONE would expect he'll be noting who brings him gifts
to furnish his new home, a settled man who should already have acquired all his trinkets long ago.

Probably NOTHING materialistic and political about this at all. It's probably not at ALL the way it looks.

7. i found this bit here so funny, sure not political at all
Huckabee said he would report any of the gifts on financial disclosure forms if he's required to by law, but indicated he did not see any ethical problems by accepting the gifts.

8. I wonder if the donors are gov. contractors--remember former CT Gov. Rowland? He received
lots of gifts related to his summer home in CT, thanks to all his good friends who happened to be state contractors.

10. They've been married for 30+ years, and She posted a gift registry
to celebrate their "covenant marriage"?

Tacky, tacky, tacky.

If after more than 30 years of marriage, your "lifelong friends" want to do something for you, they'll KNOW what to get you. Asking for gifts is Not according to Miss Manners.

11. I was going to sarcastically ask if after 30 years of marriage, what
did they need a new toaster, but lo and behold, they did register for one on Target. :eyes:

12. Huckabee is one of the guys the GOP
needs to sideline. What we're hearing now from the GOP, after their losses in the mid-terms, is all about "getting back to their base." Well, unless they only want the far right, evangelical vote, they need to appoint Huckabee to some nominal post and keep him in the background.
He's representative of the GOP that lost - he has no appeal to the middle. He's a Ricky Santorum kind of guy.
And I think the crass, moneyed machine that is the Republican Party has had enough of these cornpone religious zealots and their emphasis on banning gay marriage, flag burning, stem cell research, and a woman's right to choose.
The American people want some real work to get done. Enough with the far-right religious posturing. And Huckabee is right in the middle of that holier than thou crowd.
It doesn't help that many of these self-righteous churchy folks are also up to their halos in corruption. (how's it going these days, choirboy Ralph Reed? Managing any winning campaigns?)

15. Sounds like Hucklebuck's holding a 'Going Out of Business' Sale
He must see the handwriting on the wall for Fundie wing-nuts like himself, and so he's making one last list of the quids for which he'll supply quos.
