Senate Democrats give Lieberman standing ovation

Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman, who bolted the Democratic party after losing a primary election this year to run as an independent, won a standing ovation at a closed meeting of all Senate Democrats Tuesday.

Lieberman was introduced by Democratic Leader Harry Reid who, according to Lieberman, told his colleagues that, "families go through crisis but we survived and I just want to welcome back Joe Lieberman."

"It's been a helluva year," Lieberman told the group before imploring them to heed the lessons of the midterm election and "be willing to compromise" with Republicans.

...

"You have experiences that naturally affect you. This year in many ways did change me," he said. "But you know, we're all adults and I'll work with everyone in my caucus and the Republican caucus as well.

18. When writing a post or reply......
Just above the "subject" field should be "message options". There is a link there for the "smilies lookup table". If you open that window a list will appear, showing the text shortcuts for the cartoons, or "smilies" (sometimes called emoticons). You can either type the text shortcut or simply click on the emoticon you want and it will insert it for you.

It's easier than it sounds.

He didn't have a ground game, but he got a ton of Republican money to finance round-the-clock teevee commercials. And apparently, according to the commercials, Lamont is a wild-eyed anti-capitalist leftist who wants us to fail in Eye-rack and destroy our military.

More beholding to the majority of repugs that voted him back into power than the minority of Dem's that voted for him over the democratic candidate.

Even if we are quick to forgive and forget good ole Joe.

13. The Democrats BETTER HEED THE LESSONS OF THE MIDTERM election
and that includes Lieberman

The American public WANT US OUT OF IRAQ. They DO NOT want us to send more troops to Iraq

If the Democrats or republicans DO NOT LISTEN to the people, they will BOTH pay the consequences in 2008

In the house a lot of the seats were won by people who had fought in Iraq

There was a time early in the war when the UN wanted to take over. The current administration along with the war lovers did NOT accept that offer

Now it is time for the people in the region to deal with the mess we created

We can NOT fix this mess because it is a civil war, and we are a catalyst for more violence

If people cannot see that let them be the first to send THEIR sons and daughters, or even themseleves to Iraq

71. Not even that lucky. Bad timing in Connecticut
I understand that they moved up the primary, so it was BEFORE the filing date. It had been AFTER the filing date.

In the old system, once Joe had lost to Lamont, it would be too late for him to file, and he's be lame-ducky.

But some idiot lawmakers in Hartford forgot to move the filing date up the same amount as the primary day. Hence, Joe could take his lumps and rebound as an independent.

At least that is how I understand the timing issue went.

You know, they've been legislating for nearly four hundred years there in the Nutmeg State. You'd think they'd be beyond this...

15. LET THE PANDERING BEGIN!
Had that 1/3 of Democrats that voted with the Republicans to elect Joe had voted for Lamont instead, Lamont would have won in a landslide 55% to 31%.

Instead, we now all have to kiss Joe's ass for the next two (or more) years to keep him from defecting to the other side and giving the senate back to the GOP.

No offense to reptiles... what makes anyone think that snake lieberman is to be trusted as chair of homeland security? He's on the same page as bushco*.

Secondly, how could they give him a standing ovation knowing that the Democratic voters chose Lamont in the primary????

That's insensitive. It's a slap in the face to Democratic voters everywhere.

Couldn't they have taken him to dinner or something.

I also think Lieberman should lead the team and bring back a report regarding how well the Iraq policies he voted for are going.

***Sigh*** I know, Reid is right. It's the sensible and practical thing to do. You can look at Lieberman as Judas or you can think of him as the prodigal son. As caring parents, the Senate Dems want to welcome him back home with open arms, hoping he's learned his lesson.

I'm not quite ready to be so magnanimous.

And 'Ol Joe is hungry for power and revenge these days.

There are several moderate Republicans who aren't feeling the Party whip crack as hard on them who could be more reliable and effective allies than Lieberman, but it's obvious that for these Dems, personal affinities and membership mean far more than populist principles. That's why Howard Dean is still not part of the Dem "in crowd" and Benedict Lieberman is still coddled after he turned on his own party. _That's_ Politics 101, folks.

Groveling at the feet of Lieberman in order to keep the Democratic control of the Senate is nothing more than a placebo. Lieberkook resembles the latter.

78. 'Be willing to compromise with Republicans'...doesn't Joe-hole
realize that's exactly the sort of thinking that got him beaten in the Primary to begin with?
It's simply nauseating that we must appease this asswipe...

80. I don't like what he did.
The bottom line is that Joe got 70% of the Republican vote. I don't like this at all. I am for working with people who disagree with me, but the guy lost his primary. I appreciate what he has done over his career as a senator but I think he should do the right thing and not run again in six years. Let's get some one in there like Lamont who has fresh ideas and who actually won his party's nomination.

81. Just think about Barbara Boxer chairing the Environment
Committee, Ted Kennedy chairing the Health Care Committee, Pat Leahy controlling whether Bush's judicial nominees come to the floor for a vote, Carl Levin chairing the Armed Services Committee.

84. face it
we are powerless in this party. The base exists for one purpose to these people, to keep Dem incumbents in power. This sickening display convinces me of that idea.

86. Why Joe? Bribery comes to mind
I think Claire McCaskell from Missouri deserves a Standing Ovation, for knocking out an incumbent in a
key state. Oh, silly me, why would they do that? Senator McCaskill is a WOMAN.
