15. Very soon. 15 minutes?
It will take longer to get to the more distant parts of Japan. It is way up on the northern tip of Japan, so that will get hit first.

18. They said it on the broadcast. Now for Hawaii, as well
The weather guy Brad just did it live. Hawaii is now on a Tsunami Watch for the next few hours. Ithink he said the wave was expected at about 7am Hawaii time, which is 11am Central. So about 4.5 hours or so. Yipee.

30. uh oh. I'm in between Vancouver and the Pacific
(since Vancouver isn't directly on the ocean itself, but rather the strait)

If there's something big heading across the Pacific, there are a bunch of small isolated coastal towns that are pretty vulnerable. Port Alberni, in particular (on Vancouver Island) is at the end of a long channel, and that tends to focus the wave energy ... they had major tsunami damage from one a while back.

Meanwhile the whole area is getting hit by a winter storm (most recent in a series of them this fall).

29. The Japanese tend to overestimate tsunami danger
Edited on Wed Nov-15-06 09:27 PM by Art_from_Ark
I remember once NHK had a live cam on the port at Kushiro during a tsunami watch, and the tsunami did come-- all 10 centimeters of it.

Of course, they've had a few nasty tsunamis over the years, the most recent being on Okushjiri-to, an island on the other side of Hokkaido in July 1994-- everyone's worst tsunami nightmare. But that island got the worst of everything-- killer earthquake, then a big fire, then a 100 foot tsunami.

Anyway, good to hear everything's OK in your part of the country.

31. Strong 8.3 Earthquake Hits Island off Hokkaido of Northern Japan
strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 8.1 hits the disputed Etorofu Island off Hokkaido of northern Japan. A tsunami warning which expected waves of between one and two meters to hit Hokkaido's north and east coasts from about 9:10 p.m. was issued by the Japan Meteorological Agency right after the 8:15 p.m. quake, whose center was 390 kilometers off Etorofu.

Tsunami Warning For Alaska!!!
uneau, Alaska - A massive earthquake in Japan has officials issuing a Tsunami warning for the coastal areas of Alaska and Japan. A massive earthquake in Japan has officials issuing a Tsunami warning for the coastal areas of Alaska and Japan.

Chances are slim that a large wave will hit Alaska, but if you live along the coast you should be prepared.

(A Tsunami Warning means that all coastal residents in the warning area who are near the beach or in low-lying regions should move immediately inland to higher ground and away from all harbors and inlets including those sheltered directly from the sea. Those feeling the earth shake, seeing unusual wave action, or the water level rising or receding may have only a few minutes before the tsunami arrival and should evacuate immediately. Homes and small buildings are not designed to withstand tsunami impacts. Do not stay in these structures. - West Coast & Alaska Tsunami Warning Center)

AlaskaReport will keep you updated as soon as more information is available for Alaska.

Japanese authorities have told the country's Pacific coast residents to flee to higher ground after a powerful 8.1 earthquake hit hundreds of miles away. A tsunami of about 6 1/2 feet tall or higher was expected to hit the Pacific coast of Japan's northernmost island of Hokkaido and main island of Honshu after 3:10 a.m. AST.

Maybe someone can find AP breaking news and link it here.

http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2006/11/15/state/n182226S22.DTL

Crescent City, Calif. (AP) -- Two docks were destroyed after a five-foot surge rolled into the Crescent City Harbor on Wednesday afternoon and caused up to $700,000 in damages.

The surge is believed to be the result of an undersea earthquake with a magnitude of 8.1 that struck earlier in the day near Japan, prompting tsunami warnings for Japan, Russia and Alaska.

It was destroyed after the Anchorage quake in the 1960s and there are tsunami warnings posted in buildings etc.
