McConnell picked as Senate Republican leader

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Mitch McConnell of Kentucky was elected on Wednesday to be Senate Republican leader as his party prepares to turn over control of Congress to Democrats in January, a Republican aide said.

McConnell, now Senate Republican whip, was elected unanimously during a closed-door meeting of the Senate Republican Caucus, the party aide said. McConnell was unopposed.

2. It Will Be His and His Party's Loss Then
We don't owe the GOP anything beyond superficial courtesy.

3. They pick their most partisan and we picked one of our least partisan
So much for bi-partisanship.

I'd be concerned if Harry Reid weren't also tough as nails, as well as having the good of the country at heart.

He doesn't take any sh** from the GOP.

4. Is this the guy who refused to let the Dems into a meeting couple years ago?

Trying to remember ...

If true, so much for "bipartisanship." It would be a clear "FU" message to the Dems that the Repubs once again are placing party before country.

Edit to add: Couldn't find that info, but did find this: "A short while ago the Senate's number two Republican, Mitch McConnell, rejected Democrats' suggestions they move an investigation of pre-war intelligence in Iraq forward.

There you have it, folks. This will be a fight to learn the truth. McConnell is the Republican blockade mouthpiece.

5. Is the GOP determined to self-destruct?
In the next two years, the Republicans have a lot of fences to mend, and an opportunity to show that their so-called moderate wing isn't some neutered-with-a-dull-butter-knife lapdog for the really vicious people who have been running their party for the last quarter century or so. McConnell as Minority Leader doesn't bode well for bi-partisanship or the prospects of Republican help in pulling our country back from the brink of fascism.

Bottom line for Democrats: Keep the whips, chains and zip guns handy. The GOP may still be looking for an all-out gang war.

6. Wow. They're in trouble with a pick like that
That's an extreme ideological choice to put front and center. This is the guy who is known most for his rigid opposition to even moderate campaign finance reform.

7. He's a bought-and-paid-for slimeball -- See the Wikipedia entry
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitch_McConnell

"McConnell has raised nearly $220 million during his Senate career. Most of the money went to the campaigns of his GOP colleagues. The Lexington Herald-Ledger said that in return those collegues "have rewarded him with power". "He's completely dogged in his pursuit of money. That's his great love, above everything else," said Marshall Whitman, a former aide to Senator John McCain, R-Ariz., and a Christian Coalition lobbyist in Washington.

A six-month examination of McConnell fundraising found a significant correlation between his actions and his donors' agendas. He has supported government action to help cigarette makers, Las Vegas casinos, the pharmaceutical industry, credit card lenders, coal mine owners, and others who have given large amounts of money. McConnell has responded that he never allows money to influence him. His donors support him because they like his pro-business, conservative philosophy, he said, so it's hardly proof of corruption when he does what they want.<3>"

8. From RFK Jr.'s, "Was the 2004 Election Stolen?"
"On May 24th, Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) tried unsuccessfully to amend the immigration bill to bar anyone who lacks a government-issued photo ID from voting (206) -- a rule that would disenfranchise at least six percent of Americans, the majority of them urban and poor, who lack such identification. (207) The GOP-controlled state legislature in Indiana passed a similar measure, and an ID rule in Georgia was recently struck down as unconstitutional. "

9. McConnell is an ethically-challenged Senator
McConnell is an ethically-challenged Senator who doesn't know the difference between free speech on the one hand and bribery and extortion on the other.

13. this is great news. as he rises in the senate, so does the likelihood of him
being investigated. and he's very, very dirty.

so it will be even sweeter to see him on television defending himself. a shining example of all that republicans are.

14. He is a very "ugly" man!
Not ugly as in unattractive but ugly in his disposition. Between him and Lott we are going to need a full time strike force to rebut their constant lying and obfuscation. These two guys willbe on Fox 24/7 trying to smear denigrate and belittle the Dems for the next tow years!
