"A few new wrinkles in the Regola case from yesterday– a young boy who’d been petsitting for Pennsylvania Senator Bob Regola was found dead two months ago in the woods behind the house, with Regola’s gun sitting next to him. Police haven’t made any charges or let on to exactly what happened yet, but now Regola is saying he and his son had nothing to do with the death.
In his first public statement about the state police investigation into the death of 14-year-old Louis Farrell, Mr. Regola, R-Hempfield, said he was breaking his silence to address widespread speculation about the incident.
“Neither my son Bobby nor I had any involvement in the tragic death of Lou Farrell,” he wrote in a statement released by his lawyer, Mark Rush.
“I was in Harrisburg during the entire period in question. Bobby was away from home all day at Idlewild Park with his girlfriend and her parents, they brought him home late that night.
“He was then visited by a relative at home, and in the house with the security system activated. The security records, which have been turned over to investigators, show that no one left or entered the house during the time he was alone.”
Louis Farrell, a student at Aquinas Academy in Greensburg, was found dead behind his home July 22 with a gunshot wound of the head. A 9 mm handgun registered to Mr. Regola was found next to him.
Still, however, no idea as to what happened there in the woods– a tragic accident, a suicide, or something else. This case is also given a strange spin, considering that Regola happens to be a very pro-gun legislator. And now we find out that Farrell’s parents were doing their best to keep their own children away from firearms.
They had been on good terms as neighbors, and Mr. Regola described Louis as “a family friend and a friend of my young sons, John, Ross and Bobby, and we all mourn his loss.” Louis volunteered to work on Mr. Regola’s campaign.
At the same time, Mr. Regola is a pro-gun rights legislator and ran on that platform while Louis Farrell’s parents, J. Douglas and Lauren Farrell, are vehemently anti-gun and implored their children to stay away from guns.
“This tragedy should not be misrepresented and exploited by anti-gun advocates,” Mr. Regola said.
Despite “reckless speculation” about the gun, he said, the weapon was “stored in a case in my upstairs bedroom. It was not loaded and was not easily accessible, as I have young children at home.”
Not sure how we’re “misrepresenting” or “exploiting” this case, Senator Regola. No matter how your weapon was stored, and no matter how it was locked or unloaded or otherwise, it ended up next to the body of a dead boy. Pointing out that that proves firearms are always extremely dangerous (no matter how they’re stored) isn’t “misrepresentation”– it’s the truth."
