WP: McCain Files Presidential Paperwork, Tommy Thompson Mulling a Run
McCain Files Prez Paperwork, Thompson Mulling a Run

On Thursday, Arizona Sen. John McCain (R) will take the first formal step in an expected run for president in 2008, filing papers with the Federal Election Commission to establish an exploratory committee.

The announcement -- and the unveiling of a new Web site to accompany the exploration phase -- is not surprising. McCain and his political team have spent the last two years organizing for a national bid. Expect major McCain speeches to be made available on the new website as soon as tomorrow.

"Senator McCain by filing an exploratory committee with the F.E.C. will initiate the appropriate legal steps to explore his candidacy for President of the United States," said Craig Goldman, spokesman for McCain's exploratory effort. "He will not make a final decision until early next year."....

These committees allow aspiring candidates to raise money and travel around the country as they weigh the pros and cons of a presidential bid.

Speaking of exploratory committees, former Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson (R) told an audience in Des Moines today that he is looking at a run for president. "There should be a Midwestern candidate for president," said Thompson. According to the Des Moines Register, Thompson will set up an exploratory committee in early 2007 and make a final decision on the race by the spring. Thompson served as governor of Wisconsin from 1986-2001 when he left to serve a stint as secretary of the Health and Human Services department.

28. The Liberal news media
will give them all the front page space they need.

Taking Baby OFF the front pages is more important
than any Repub Presidential hopeful. After all,
the smite has hit the proverbial fan. Demos will
be investigating one scandal after another.

Could it be, Mc & TT, will be the good news?

4. Sadly lots of otherwise sane people think he has "Integrity"
Happily at least one of my McCain-has-integrity friends woke up when he saw McCain doing Rove's dirty work during the Kerry Joke incident.

5. I agree
He's too damn old to be president, and too much of a Bush ass-kisser. And to think I used to really like the guy ...

8. I use to like the guy too, but he started losing me when
he refused to defend himself against the Rove slime

The final nail hit the coffin when he made out with boosh onstage.

That pic still makes me queasy. He absolutely has Stockholm syndrome,
and it is not from being a POW.

6. Well, he's not George Bush, so there's one qualification.
Second one is he is a "Midwestern Governor" which are two words that seem to captivate some DU'ers.

To me he is just another republican w zero foreign policy experience.

10. It's a well-known fact that republicons are congenital flip-floppers
Edited on Wed Nov-15-06 08:49 PM by SpiralHawk
They like to project their shit on to other people.

But who can ever forget the republicons claiming to be the party of morality?

Hardy har har.

Who can ever forget the republicons claiming to be the party of fiscal restraint?

Hardy har har.

Who can ever forget the republicons condemning the notion of Nation Building?

Hardy har har.

So for the cons, flip-flopping is part & parcelof their duplitious cronyhood.

13. Former Wis. governor to explore presidential run
http://www.startribune.com/587/story/813768.html

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Former Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson, who served as Health and Human Services Secretary in President Bush's first term, said Wednesday he intends to form a committee to explore a possible run for the White House in 2008.

"I intend to do so after the first of the year,'' the Republican said in reference to establishing an exploratory committee.

Thompson made the comments in Iowa, where he met with about 100 members of a group called Iowans for Wellness and Prevention. The state holds the first votes of the presidential nominating process.

Thompson, who will turn 65 on Sunday, spent nearly four decades in politics and government, including 14 years as governor. He resigned as HHS secretary in December 2004 shortly after Bush won a second term. His tenure at HHS was marked by anthrax attacks, a flu vaccine shortage and passage of the Medicare prescription law.

(end snip)

They'll let anybody run, the rethuglicans. Where's the anthrax investigation, Tommy? Where? The Florida photo editor drank from a stream, isn't that what you said, Tommy, for 4 days? Who told you to say that, Tommy? Who.

18. Please, please, please, God; I never pray for anything, but just this once,
answer my prayer: Make the Republicans nominate Tommy Thompson. The Medicare Prescription Disaster Guy. The Flu Vaccine Shortage Guy. The Obscure Former Governor Who Fucked Up Wisconsin. Please, make it be that guy!

But seriously. In what alternate dimension did he get the idea he should run?

24. Toxic Tommy....
as he is unaffectionately still known around here. I gotta laugh - it took TT about 10 years in office before he could manage understandable english in front of an audience. This guy makes the Decider look like Albert Einstein. Too bad the size of one's ego doesn't equate to governing ability and knowledge.

25. Wow. The Republican candidates just.....suck.
They've got unfaithful husbands, obscure do-nothing governors, congressional fascist nutcases, and potentially, a black woman who failed at the only government jobs she's ever had.

Yeah, that'll really excite the Republican base.

:P

30. I think John's making far more money as a "consultant"
than he could ever make as a president, governor, or any other public office.

He's made too many enemies to run for president. On top of that, he would not be able to compete well in a debate, especially against the 3 top-running dems-Hillary, Obama or Edwards.

32. Three potential Republican candidates, all charismatically challenged.
The most exciting thing about McCain is that he's nuttier than squirrel shit. Here's a guy who was tortured in Vietnam who rolled over and showed Bush his belly so the Military Commissions Act could be passed.

The most exciting thing about Giuliani (America's Mayor™) is that he has a zipper problem.

The most exciting thing about Thompson is, well, uh... Damn. He REALLY is charismatically challenged.
