I think I remember that in the past there had been perhaps three or four conservative Democrats who had abstained from voting for her as Minority Leader (though one, I think, was Ken Lucas of KY who retired). It's great if they all decided to stick together this time. That's a powerful statement for the Democrats.

As Jane said on Firedoglake, my XX chromosomes are feeling proud today!
BTW, yes, I know that the Speaker being a woman isn't the most important part of this...Nancy deserves it in her own right. But I can't help but feeling good about the fact that she is the first woman to hold that role.

Hoyer's a hawk. That's not what the electorate had in mind. That said, I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, for now, and wait and see what he does. Unsettled.

28. The media and idiot bloggers are already spinning this. |

Nancy Pelosi wins the speakership, thus making history, and wins it by acclamation, thus proving she has the backing of her party.
And how does the media react?
By crowing about her "defeat" since Steny Hoyer beat out Jack Murtha for the majority leader post.
Un-freaking-believable.
Thus far Keith Olbermann of MSNBC's Countdown is one of the few who put this in perspective, as he devoted a segment of tonight's program to the media's spinning of Trent Lott's squeaker victory (by one vote) to be minority whip as a "comeback" and Murtha's defeat as a setback for Pelosi.
I was particularly disgusted that AOL gave space to a blogger known only by the name of Scott (but a GOP operative, judging by his previous posts), who spun the story accordingly.
Then again, living well and having a legacy make the best revenge. A hundred years from now Nancy Pelosi's name will be in the history books. Blog THAT.
