KINGSTON - U.S. Rep. Maurice Hinchey still stands behind a bill calling for an investigation of the Bush administration that could lead to possible impeachment, despite the Ulster County Legislature's decision to hold off on a similar resolution and the assertion by House Speaker-in-waiting Nancy Pelosi that impeachment is off the table.
Ulster County legislators last referred back to the Efficiency, Reform and Intergovernmental Affairs Committee a resolution to support an investigation of Bush's actions in the run-up to the Iraq war.
...
"Ulster County has an adequate number of their own issues or problems, so I don't see why we should be worrying about the Congress and their responsibility," said Glenn Noonan, R-Gardiner.
...
"I don't know what was on her (Pelosi's) mind when she said that," Hinchey said, "but it may be the process takes some time. ... Impeachment at this stage is premature, but investigation into the activities of the administration is absolutely necessary."
"If they (congressional leaders) don't see the need for it, what difference (will) it ... make for Ulster County to send a resolution down there?" Noonan said. "Do you think it's going to change Nancy Pelosi's mind?"
