CNN/AP: Massachusetts gears up for same-sex-marriage showdown demanded by Gov. Romney
Massachusetts gears up for same-sex-marriage showdown
November 16, 2006

BOSTON, Massachusetts (AP) -- Gov. Mitt Romney plans to appear at a rally Sunday to demand that lawmakers, who have largely ignored him on the matter, vote on a proposed ballot question that would end same-sex marriage in Massachusetts.

Last week, the Legislature again refused to take up the question at a joint session, voting instead to recess until January 2, which all but killed the measure because a vote then is unlikely.

Romney's spokesman, Eric Fehrnstrom, said the fight won't be over until the people vote.

"No matter how you may feel about the marriage issue, people have a right to participate in their own government," he said.

Arline Isaacson of the Gay and Lesbian Political Caucus said Romney is using a rally for a lost cause to boost his prospects with conservatives as he weighs a presidential run....

24. Hey, I just looked at that "doma" link of yours
and it's interesting! The idea of denying marriage to people who are not in it for the procreation of children puts the whole issue of equal marriage in perspective. I've long asked my conservative and fundie acquaintances how a marriage between myself and my girlfriend (she's post-menopause, I've had a vasectomy) "damages" marriage less than a gay couple (who might very well decide to have or bear children) would. That website really tells it like it is!!

5. It's the fight for the right.
This isn't about Massachusetts in 2006. It's about the country in 2008. Every GOP 2008 hopeful is trying to be the guy who's the farthest to the right, thinking that will get him the lunatic fundie votes.

Frankly, I wish him luck. I'd like to see them nominate someone who leans so far to the right, he's falling over. I think the country is fed up with that crap.

13. EEK! You definitely have a point there.!
That IS what I said about Bush in 2000! I said I hoped he was nominated instead of McCain because he'd be so much easier to beat. How can I forget that?

25. They'll never nominate him
The fundies regard Mormons as a cult, in other words, they're worried that missionaries will cart away their young. Go check out what the freepers think of Mormons, you'd think they came from another planet.

8. Mittens led a in October too. Voters ignored him.
The Legislature will let the amendment die and
the voters had no problem with that.
Romney is campaigning for the out-of-state
Republican base. He is irrelevant here.

10. A complete ass
I was telling my husband how nice it would be to live in a world where sexual orientation stopped being the whipping post for right wing pukes.

My husband was talking to a man who sells these wonderful homemade soap products in this cool little shop. The man who is black, was talking about how he went to an all white school for most of his life, and "It's too bad everyone knew I was gay too"---Like HE had something to be ashamed of. Suffered a lot. He felt something was wrong with his choice of business I guess-- as though he was reinforcing fucked up stereotypes of assholes. The guy is very cool, and has to deal with all this emotional bullshit, for what? To satisfy the soul destroying prejudice of assholes like Romney. And "the people" who vote against marriage for two people in a loving, committed living relationship. It makes me sick

I really want to live in a world where this stops. It needs to STOP.

Massachusetts rocks in my mind right now.

11. This is Romney's way of getting in the news and attract conservative
voters. He is just disgusting. he is willing to exploit groups of people just to get a head. I hope it backfires and people see him for the slim he is.

14. Their logic is so stupid.
People ARE participating in their own government by, you know, electing their representatives! That's what happens in a representative democracy. Not every decision goes before the voters simply because some extremist religiofascist governor wants it to.

18. It amazes me...
How people try to frame this as a "people have a right to participate in their own government".

This is NOT about their government. It's about my life. So, basically, these people think that it's necessary for them to have some control over my life.

Sad. Really, sooooo sad.

21. " Romney leaves behind tough decisions for Patrick"
<The outgoing Republican governor is leaving his Democratic replacement with the decision about whether to forge ahead with removing tolls on the Massachusetts Turnpike west of Route 128. He’s also letting him to decide whether to retain $425 million in budget cuts made by Romney, which includes eliminating pet projects favored by a variety of House and Senate members.

In addition, he just completed a safety review of the $14.6 billion Big Dig, in which the governor pointed out everything from a corroded light fixture to a troublesome bridge component holding up 1 million pounds. He also acknowledged it will be Patrick’s responsibility to implement the fixes after he leaves office in January.

And none of that is even touching the idea that Patrick – not Romney – will be charged with implementing the state’s new universal health-care law. It is the first of its kind in the nation.>

but he wants a say in gay marriage.

22. He despises Massachusetts anyway
The people here know it and could care less about a blustering fool who spent most of his time in office traveling the country running for president instead of actually GOVERNING our state.

I think I speak for most of Mass when I say "SCREW YOU MITT, GET THE HELL OUT OF MY STATE!"
