Former Michigan football coach collapses
2006/11

DETROIT - Former Michigan football coach Bo Schembechler collapsed Friday during the taping of a television show and was taken by ambulance to a hospital.

Messages were left with the university, Schembechler‘s office and at Providence Hospital, where WXYZ said Schembechler was taken.

Schembechler said he did not plan to attend the game in Columbus, Ohio, and he doesn‘t go to road games anymore.

The seven-time Big Ten coach of the year had a 194-48-5 record at Michigan from 1969-89. His record in 26 years of coaching was 234-64-8.

Bo Schembechler Has Died
Submitted by Eugmc on Fri, 2006-11-17 12:10.

Legendary Michigan head coach Bo Schembechler has died today from a massive heart attack at the age of 77. His death comes on the eve the biggest Ohio State v. Michigan football game in the history of their bitter rivalry. He collapsed and passed away while taping his weekly tv show.

Born in 1929, Schembechler is known as one of collegiate football's most dominant coaches in the Big Ten conference. Bo served a twenty-one year tenure at the University of Michigan, which also included a stint as University athletic director.

Bo was an undergraduate student at the University of Miami in Ohio and played football under the legendary coach Woody Hayes. As a graduate student at Ohio State University, Bo served as an assistant coach to Hayes. Schembechler spent some time in the military, and after that he served as an assistant coach a Presbyterian College in Clinton, South Carolina in the mid 1950s. Subsequently, he spent time as an assistant coach at both Bowling Green and Northwestern universities.

In 1958, Bo returned to Ohio State as an assistant to Hayes. The two were known for their differences of opinion, although they shared a similiarly conservative approach to the game. Schembechler served under Hayes until 1969 when he left Ohio State to assume the role of head coach at rival University of Michigan.

At the time Bo arrived at the University of Michigan, they had only an average team. However, he was quickly able to turn them around into

4. HOLY CRAP!!!
I just read this morning about the OSU-themed punk band that dresses up as Woody Hayes and sings anti-Michigan songs called the Dead Schembechlers. The band's frontman, Bo Biafra, was quoted even as saying "Bo Schembechler can never die. Eerie.

How do you think that band's feeling today?

7. End Of An Era...
Normally I lurk, but I had to come out of hiding for this announcement.

I'm a loyal Buckeye, class of '83, but I know I'm not alone in stating Bo will be missed. I feel as bad as I did when Woody died. Most assuredly the end of an era.

I almost wish the game could be postponed... Almost.

10. Do you remember when Bo fired the basketball coach at Michigan...
...when Bo was the AD.

He fired Bill Frieder (sp?)before the end of the season because Frieder took a job at Arizona for the next season saying something like, "Only a Michigan man will coach Michigan". Bo hired asst coach Steve Fisher who ended up winning the NCAA Tournament Title.

Really liked Bo a lot. He's the reason that Michigan has always been my favorite college team, even though I'm from Illinois.

I could be wrong and I hope to God I am not, but I think this might reduce the violent acts considerably in Columbus - just out of respect. (OK, all me naive). Of course, OSU is going to win anyway...

Go get em Bo. This really is sad news.

When his good friend Woody way very sick a stupid reporter
asked Bo if Woody wanted could he sit on the Michigan bench.
Bo said, "That man could sit on my bench any day of the week."

Reporter being stupid then asked, "What if he did not want to sit
on your bench?'

Bo, "I would give him your *^^@!!XX tickets."

Much love Bo from an Ohio State Fan!

15. Godspeed, Bo
Here in Ann Arbor, the mood is utter shock. I loved that man, despite his conservative politics. He loved Michigan so much. There is a pall hanging over us today.

He's up there now with Bob Ufer and Don Canham, pulling for a Michigan win tomorrow. Go Blue -- for Bo.

17. My son just called me from work
I have been away from the computer so did not see the post.

Michigan family here (even my Mom)- living in Wisconsin now. My dear late husband used to get so keyed up for the OSU game that he would get in this really weird behavior. He would sit in "his" chair and not MAKE A PEEP during the game no matter how exciting. If I shouted out at a play, I would be banished to watch it upstairs.

My son thankfully does not feel I am a "jinx" just by being in the same room - has invited me over to his house for the game. I am so glad - was dreading watching it alone.

We will be armed with the Victors song on CD, Rose Bowl pins and Pompons and sweatchirts etc. His dear wife will tolerate our craziness, not being a football fan of any sort.

Neither of us is too optimistic about the final score, but just wish this game were in the BIG HOUSE for the appropriate Bo honoring.

22. It is now a lock that Michigan will win
Jesus, I am pumped up to win one for him and I am an LSU and Texas fan.

Michigan has lost an icon. He will be missed.

I also believe he will be credited from navigating his team to a win tomorrow and the national championship. All Michigan was lacking this season was heart.

They likely just got it.

Now, I am heading out to find a board to bet on that hasn't factored in his untimely and sad passing.

28. You said it -- it's all our guys needed for extra incentive
They'll win one for Bo now, for sure. If that's not incentive enough, I don't know what is.

Go Blue and RIP, Bo. He started at Michigan in my junior year and we beat OSU 24-12 that year on a beautiful November day. I believe they were ranked #1 at the time. It was the beginning of a wonderful run.

30. Go Blue.
Our high school was modeled after the Wolverines...Helmets, fight song, colors, slogans, etc.

Watching Michigan games brings me back when they score and I hear the fight song.

Bo had a good run. Hope he's got good seats. Sure is weird that he had a heart attack at the same studio where he has his last heart attack on Oct. 30th.

By the way, over 21 years he won an AVERAGE of 9.23 games per season. AVERAGE. In the era of 9 and 10 game seasons when one of the games every year for 1/2 of that time was against Woody Hayes @ Ohio State. Amazing.

Michigan by 14.

Thanks Bo.

31. a LOCK? LOL...
if that makes you feel better, OK, but the game is not in Ann Arbor, and the Michigan players might feel like they are supposed to be sad, but none of them were even born when he was coach and I doubt his death is going to increase their talents on the playing field.

It might give them a little emotion on the field, but it's hardly a lock. :-)

23. Man, he was just on tv talking about the game a week or so ago
This is so sad. This is for real, right, not some sick joke on the part of an OSU fan?

Bo's been missing his wife for a few years, now. At least they are now together, but Woody's probably up there throwing line markers at St. Peter, trying to get him to keep Bo out of heaven. Assuming Woody is there, that is.

27. I know, but Woody was so hysterically dramatic in his Michigan hatred
I know Woody used to love to throw those line markers-I remember a story his wife told, about how she used to keep a set at home for him to practice with. When the reporter asked her why, she said "If he's going to throw them, he's going to be the best at it" or words to that effect.

But Woody wouldn't even say the name Michigan, according to the legends. I know Bo was his assistant before he went to coach at Michigan. I was just joking.

33. Here are my two favorite Woody Stories
- OSU was scheduled to play USC in the Rose Bowl with the national title on the line. Former president Harry Truman had just died. During the pre-game press conference, legendary USC coach John McKay got up and talked X's and O's and how they were going to have to stop OSU's Robust T. When it was Woody's turn, he got up and gave a 15 minute disertation on the life of Harry Truman. Apparently, there were tears in the room. One of the reporters asked Woody why he, a life-long Republican, would give a speech about Harry Truman. Woody responded; "Dag-nammit, a former president of the United States had just died and no one was saying a word about him. I wasn't going to let that stand".

Woody's Buckeyes held O.J. Simpson to 69 yards rushing and one the game.

- After a loss in the Rose Bowl one year, Woody was unavailable for the post game press conference. Most assumed he was sulking. In reality, Woody had to catch a plane to South East Asia. He took reels of film from the game and the OSU season to Vietnam and traveled throughout the country showing the films to our troops.

Woody and Bo. It is truly the end of an era.

25. From a devout Buckeye Fan
Of course everyone knows Bo was an Ohio boy. Born in Barberton Ohio and learned most of what he knew about football from Woody Hayes. In Bo's book, he had a chapter about his relationship with Woody. I'm paraphrasing but it goes like this" "Woody molded me, he shaped me and he made me the man I am today. I'll never meet another man like him....not in this life anyway". Woody and Bo, together again.....RIP Bo. Except for one fall Saturday a year, we loved him too.

Thank you, Bo for all you brought to college football - the sportsmanship, the excitement, but mostly for your insistence that being a "Michigan Man" meant playing by the rules, and never cheating. At our Maize and Blue home, we mourn your death as if a treasured family member has died. Our kitties BO and BLUE were named in your honor - that's how much we loved you.
I am so glad I got my hubby those tickets to that luncheon where you spoke two years ago - meeting you was one of the proudest moments of my hubby's football life.

GO BLUE!
