Dean Basks in Glow of Democratic Wins
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Filed at 3:39 p.m. ET

TETON VILLAGE, Wyo. (AP) -- Democratic chairman Howard Dean basked in the afterglow of midterm election victories Friday with the state party chairmen who were among the biggest beneficiaries of his 50-state strategy.

Dean, scheduled to speak to the Association of State Democratic Chairs at a ski resort getaway, was lauded for his approach of funneling more money to the state Democratic party organizations -- money they partly used to hire staff to organize and put pressure on Republicans.

..cut..

t's clear who state party directors and chairmen, who get the money, have sided with.

''I don't think Mr. Carville knows what he's talking about,'' said Richard Stallings, the Idaho party chairman. ''Democrats haven't been winning on the kind of stuff Carville is talking about. The 50-state strategy is the future.

1. Apparently
Canadians are not happy w/ Howard giving a keynote address at their convention.

'...Members of Canada's out-of-power Liberal Party were in a snit over the selection of Dean to give the keynote address at their upcoming convention to elect a national leader....

''I, as a Canadian, am appalled to have an American loser address a keynote convention that will choose Canada's next prime minister,'' Ray Heard, former Liberal Party communications director, told CTV television on Thursday.

Hey Rayster, stick around and listen to the good Dr. Dean. You might learn something. Dean's strategy is easily transferred to other areas.

4. State and local parties are winners too
because of the 50 state plan. And to read the Canadian remarks at the end of the article was kinda funny, in spite of the bitterness. Wait till Dean goes and wins over the audience in Canada. This guy'll be left to sit in his own poop and cry.

Rock on Governor Dean! And happy birthday too!

7. That is a weird article by the AP...most of it critical.
How in the world did they get from Wyoming to Canada and the Liberal party keynote speech? They got in every dig they could.

If the article was about "basking", which is sarcastic in itself...then he was "basking" in Wyoming...and the rest was snark.

The media represents only the opinions of those at the top of the economic ladder. To hell with the people....

13. Why is this a surprise?
This is the same media that gave Bush a pass for a week while people were dying in New Orleans and ignored 100,000's of people marching in DC a month later.

11. Carville's Jealous
Ol' reptile face has burned his bridges with the dem grassroots. The jerk is toast to the folks who matter in the Democratic Party: those of us who do the voting. Maybe the wife will hire him now.
Great job, Howard - and thanks for doing it right.

26. You nailed it in ONE. Carville used to be The Strategist, now he's the Has-Been
This fit of pique is his way of singing "Glory Days" and pretending that he's still a young and vital player on the scene.

He's just past his sell-by date, and he's angered that the guy to whom HE gave debate advice (remember those scenes in Clooney's K Street?) has eclipsed him in the strategy game.

14. The BOOTS ON THE GROUND love Dr. Dean, as opposed to...
...the ivory tower belt-way DEMS with their nose stuck in fancy-pants position papers that not one swing-voter will ever read...

...of course the out-of-touchers oppose Dean- I doubt they even have much of an idea of what goes on at the ground level.

15. Dean is a visionary
Carville is stuck in the past. It's positive that Carville wants to see the party improve -- you can always take a look and do things better - but it was extremely tacky how he aired his discontent via his caustic comments. It didn't help anyone.

I'm proud to have supported Dean for his presidential run in '04, and I'm thrilled with his handling of the DNC. I'm convinced his 50-state strategy is building an annuity for dems that will continue to pay well into the future.

23. Yes, let's remember that the last time carville had ideas that paid off
(or actions that paid off) was in 1992. HOW MANY YEARS AGO WAS THAT??? Since then, he's been quite worthless, good for a whole lotta NOTHING. I think he's been sleeping with the enemy too long. It's so good to hear Dean getting the kudos that he deserves!

16. I love posting this! We did great!!

They used this image against Dean, now I'm using it to give him props. He deserves them, along with many, many others who will never be named on this board.

And yes, even the money-arm of the party gets some credit.

20. It may be necessary
Only because it will be a Presidential election year vs a Mid-term election.

Individual states are easier to win than National elections. Just as State Senate and State House races are easier to win than state-wide elections.

Between Presidential elections is the time to build which is what Dean has done. Building the volunteer database, prepping future candidates, developing lists of contributors, etc.

It may be that we need the DNC to have two arms to assist in campaigns. Focusing independently of each other. One for the Presidential election and the other for state-wide and down.

We do need to do a better job of targeting states. Determine where the votes that are needed to win in each state and concentrate on those areas. Determine which states that are probably unwinnable but still would make the Republicans unable to avoid putting effort into it. I hope they consider the results of 2006. Many or just a few of those that ran this time and didn't win but made a good showing may need to be examined as potential opponents to current Republican candidates. An example is in our district where the Democratic candidate made the strongest challenger the Republican has had in a long time and the Republican had to spend maybe 4 times as much and the RNCC or whatever they were called really went all out against the Democratic candidate.

21. If we don't show overwhelming numbers in overwhelming
numbers of districts, we won't win.

We NEED 50 state structure. We NEED to make them RUN
in every race. Spend in EVERY race. We need to recruit
sincere people who will actively campaign and stay on
message. LOOK what we can achieve when the structure
is THERE, and the grassroots are willing to WORK.

DLC CANNOT continue to choose our candidates.
The grassroots are WATCHING NOW.

WE HAVE THE INTERNETS.

22. Every time I think I can't love Howard Dean more, he comes along
and says something like this (from the bottom of the story):

''We are going to do the 50-state strategy for the next 150 years so we can be the dominant party power in this country again,'' he said. ''You can't be the powerful party in this country who controls the government unless you are willing to let the people control you. And the only way you can do that is ask everybody for their vote, understand everybody is our boss even if they vote for you or not.''

MAN, does he get it. He gets it. DAYUM. He's a HERO! And it's so gratifying to hear the state chairs voice their agreement. They should. They saw in the trenches how Howard's way worked.

And as for you, carville - you simply, unabashedly, and completely SUCK!

I suggest anytime anybody here calls his/her congressperson or senator for any reason, add in a plug for Howard Dean, and how HIS ideas got us where we are now - on the eve of TAKING BACK Capitol Hill.

27. He certainly does get it.
That part struck a chord in me too, he framed it perfectly. When the DNC comes calling, I usually play dumb before I reach for my wallet and say something like "is that the organization that Dean chairs?" I just want them to never forget why they're getting my donation.
