LAS VEGAS (AP) - A lame-duck lawmaker who lost a bid for Congress said the state Legislature should adopt a measure making English the official language of Nevada.
Assemblywoman Sharron Angle, R-Reno, said another legislator was willing to introduce a measure similar to an ordinance adopted this week by the Town Council in Pahrump. She declined to identify the lawmaker who would carry the bill when the Legislature convenes in February.
The Pahrump measure made English the official language in the community 60 miles west of Las Vegas. It also restricted the display of foreign flags and denied town benefits to illegal immigrants. "Obviously, we agree on some things," Angle told the Las Vegas Review-Journal for a Friday report. She said she had been traveling out-of-state and was not familiar with the Pahrump ordinance.
Angle gave up her Assembly seat to run for Nevada's 2nd Congressional District seat. She lost in the Republican primary to Nevada Secretary of State Heller, who won the seat this month over Democrat Jill Derby. Angle's primary campaign was largely financed by the Washington, D.C.-based Club for Growth, a national conservative group.
State Senate Minority Leader Dina Titus, D-Las Vegas, said an English-only measure would go nowhere in the 2007 Legislature.
