Bush Works to Reassure Leaders Despite Thumping

HANOI (Reuters) - Chastened by U.S. voters, President George W. Bush is working hard to assure Asian allies that he remains a potent force with no major changes contemplated in U.S.-Pacific ties.
Bush's week-long trip to Singapore, Vietnam and Indonesia is his first abroad since he and his Republicans underwent what he freely admitted was a ``thumping'' by voters who put Democrats in charge of the U.S. Congress.
With world leaders watching Bush's body language carefully to see if he has the same old intestinal fortitude, Bush is pounding away at his twin goals for Asia of keeping the peace and expanding trade....

Leaders have found Bush his usual upbeat self.
"Whether the election had a thumping outcome or not, he is in a thumping mood,'' Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said in describing his meeting with Bush on Thursday.
Asked about Bush's mood after the election, Lee described him as a "strong leader'' with a "certain verve.''...
