WTC's Freedom Tower starts to take shape
Edited on Sun Nov-19-06 02:05 PM by Roland99
http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2006-11-19-freedom-tower_x.htm

Seventy trucks rolled into ground zero Saturday to pour the concrete base of the signature skyscraper at the new World Trade Center, creating the first visible signs of the long-delayed tower.

The concrete mixers began by dropping 520 cubic yards of concrete near thin steel bars jutting from the bottom of ground zero. The base will anchor the 1,776-foot Freedom Tower's concrete core. Next month, the first steel beams for the tower are scheduled to rise.

The site has been bustling in recent months, with work on half a dozen projects underway after years of disputes about designs and authority over the redevelopment.

"We've really turned this site around," said Steve Plate, director of priority capital programs for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which owned the trade center.

Gawd I hate the name of that building.

1. I agree . . . could there be a more obnoxious name?
Still looking forward to standing across the river in Liberty State Park, where my wife used to work. And seeing SOMETHING there . . .

5. I was just about to say something about that.
The name is simply revolting. The terror attack had nothing to do with freedom.

7. i agree with the first part...
the name is very corny. i would feel silly calling it the freedom tower. however, if you think 9/11 was anything less than an attack on our country, and more importantly, what it stands for (i.e. freedom), you are seriously misinformed. 9/11 was an attack on the western way of life.

37. seriously, they care little if at all about our way of life....
These are acts of political violence, brought on by infractions, sometimes real and sometimes perceived, that Western countries have committed against their people. Occupations, for example. Or blind U.S. support for Israel or other apostate regimes in the region. Historically, what we define as "terrorists" could care less about what we do, what are freedoms are, what kind of economic system we have or anything that construes "our way of life" because what they really would like is for us simply to leave them alone and stay out of their way of life. However, in the last five years something interesting has come up, you are now seeing people become fanaticized, not because of any political aspersions, but simply because Bush has become such a polarizing figure in the world and screwed up the Middle East so bad. The invasion of Iraq was an interesting turning point in the creation and evolution of terrorism. Now Muslims who are not directly effected by an occupation or some other event actually are beginning to hate the U.S. simply just to hate the U.S. That is how bad our reputation has become.

Still though, it is not about the obliteration of our way of life. They neither want that or even think they can do it. They do think they can make everything such a mess that we will eventually just leave them alone.

2. wonder if all this *sudden* action is to deflect from the body parts
still being found? :sarcasm:

I'm sorry, but I'm very cynical about this. Especially in light of the fact that 5 years have gone by with nothing happening. Then more victim parts are found in several places. Which would make any thinking person wonder if there are other places that *should* be searched, but haven't.

Presto! In rolls the concrete trucks! Convenient?

19. Perhaps they found the body bits
because they were poking around where nobody had poked since 9/11, making sure everything was there that should be there for construction.

3. Considering it's dedicated to pushing us all into serfdom,
so do I. The only compensation is that it will be an attractive TARGET for the next bunch of murderously crazy assholes with a grudge against this country.

The name IS Orwellian. Freedom, my arse.

Just like the phrase Homeland Security. It is disgusting how they have labeled everything to help along the revisionist history chapter of their reign.

10. I hate the name too
and I also hate "Liberty International Airport" (the airport formerly known as "Newark").

As for the WTC, THIS is what needs to be done, not that flaky tower that will be like salt in a wound every time I see it:

15. pass it on!!!
And to those in this thread making Trump jokes - hey, I think he's a pushy egomaniac with exceptionally bad hair, but HE is one of the only money guys who supported the Make NY NY concept for rebuilding the WTC.

IMNSHO, building *anything* else on that site is an insult to New York City and to the United States Of America. Liebskind's building just pounds sand, it's fugly and creepy.

as far as anybody in NJ is concerned.

It's like Reagan Airport in the D.C. area in that respect.
