McCain: More troops needed in Iraq
AP 11/19/06

WASHINGTON - Without additional troops to ensure victory in Iraq, the U.S. could
find itself more vulnerable to terrorist attacks at home, Sen. John McCain said
Sunday.

Taking the opposite tack, newly empowered Democrats pressed their case for a
phased withdrawal of American forces. They hoped a blue-ribbon advisory panel
would propose a way ahead for Iraq, while making clear the U.S. military mission
shouldn't last indefinitely.

McCain, front-running GOP presidential hopeful for 2008, said the U.S. must send
an overwhelming number of troops to stabilize Iraq or face more attacks - in the
region and possibly on American soil.

"I believe the consequences of failure are catastrophic," said McCain, R-Ariz. "It will
spread to the region. You will see Iran more emboldened. Eventually, you could see
Iran pose a greater threat to the state of israel."

The result of GOP policies that McCain supported have resulted in consequences
in the Middle East that truly are catastrophic. And now it looks like Insane McCain
wants more of the same.

It makes you almost wonder if he actually remembers Vietnam.

1. Hmmm... then maybe we should have thought of that before we invaded
And maybe the people who fucked up should resign in disgrace at screwing it up so badly.

Oh, wait, I forgot, BushCo is the Personal Responsibility Administration, but the election of 2000 was Opposite Day so it's really the Unaccountability Administration.

4. McCain must be on drugs
He is painting himself into an extreme right-wing corner. I know conservative Republicans who now think it is time to start withdrawing troops. He is getting terrible advice from someone.

5. Bush's Hand Puppet Lives!
Overturn Row v. Wade and escalate the war on Iraq? Sounds like McCain's "Rove" is no other than Sean Hannity! W must be real happy. McCain is "clearing the brush" for his brother, Jeb. When the time is right, McCain will be "swift-boated" to make room for Jeb and W's $150 million in campaign funds.

7. Frank Rich nailed him on this
I think it was in today's NY Times - basically said that by 2008, the war will be such an albatross politically for anybody that supported it that the only way for McCain to not totally go under because of it is to ask for more troops (which McCain damn well knows are not available) and then say, "well, if only the White House & Rummy listened to me, it would not have been such a disaster"

10. Yep. That's all this is about.
All the right wing assholes are in CYA mode. You don't get to the level they are at without learning how to do it very well.

9. How many troops would it take to completely surround Iraq?
Iraq's borders represents 2,267 miles, so if we placed a soldier every 10 feet along the entire perimeter, that would require 528 soldiers per mile or a total of 1,196,976 active soldiers. McCain's suggestion of 20,000 more troops is slightly short of what would be required to seal the borders of Iraq against further infiltration by insurgents. Better if we just leave.

Land boundaries:
total: 3,650 km
border countries: Iran 1,458 km, Jordan 181 km, Kuwait 240 km, Saudi Arabia 814 km, Syria 605 km, Turkey 352 km

15. Wasn't he just bitching about how badly the war was going?
Last week when a general (was it Abazaid?) was testifying before his committee?

So he wants to send MORE troops into the charnel house?

Why am I NOT surprised?
