Army's 3rd Infantry Division First to Serve Third Tour in Iraq
Nov. 20, 2006 — The Pentagon has announced the deployment of more than 65,000 troops early next year to replace units currently serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.
For some, like the Army's newly-formed 4th Brigade of the 1st Infantry, a unit which will provide a range of combat and support services in Iraq, it is a first tour.
But for others, like the Army's 3rd Infantry Division which led the effort in Iraq at the onset of the war, it is a record third tour since the war began, reflective of the current strain on military forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. In fact, the 3rd Infantry will become the Army's first division to serve three tours in Iraq.
The 3rd Infantry Division and the 4th Brigade of the 1st Infantry are part of the 57,000 troops who have been notified as part of the Defense Department's announcement that they will serve as replacement forces in Iraq. The total includes 20,000 combat troops from 5 combat brigades, as well as 27,000 active duty troops and 10,000 reservists.
