New Survey: Iraqis Want a Speedy U.S. Exit

NEW YORK Past surveys have hinted at this result, but a new poll in Iraq makes it more stark than ever: the Iraqi people want the U.S. to exit their country. And most Iraqis now approve of attacks on U.S. forces, even though 94% express disapproval of al-Qaeda.

At one time, this was primarily a call by the Sunni minority, but now the Shiites have also come around to this view. The survey by much-respected World Public Opinion (WPO), taken in September, found that 74% of Shiites and 91% of Sunnis in Iraq want us to leave within a year. The number of Shiites making this call in Baghdad, where the U.S. may send more troops to bring order, is even higher (80%) In contrast, earlier this year, 57% of this same group backed an "open-ended" U.S. stay.

By a wide margin, both groups believe U.S. forces are provoking more violence than they're preventing -- and that day-to-day security would improve if we left. Support for attacks on U.S. forces now commands majority support among both Shiites and Sunnis.

Among Iraqis overall, 77% percent prefer that a strong government get rid of militias, including 100% of the Sunnis polled and 82% of Kurds.
But "the Shia population in Baghdad is more skeptical than elsewhere about the wisdom of disarming the militias," a report by WPO states. In Baghdad, Shias say they want militias to continue to protect their security (59%).

The national survey reached 1,150 Iraqis.

3. Had our brilliant govt. listened to Murtha a year ago
there seems to be a strong possibilty that things wouldn't be any worse than now and most likely better. Keep "Colition forces" on standby on the borders in case of a major disaster in that country. In the last year everything Murtha suggested has occured, chaos, there and around the world. Are there any adults that can run this country?

The bastard Bolton is mouthing off at the U.N. today and showing his nasty temper about what occured in Lebanon. That is one idiot that must be removed but Dufus is sure to find more idiots running around Washington panting for a posh, do nothing job!

Since I am ranting, where the hell are the photos of Dufus on this world wide trip? They showed him twice, except for exiting/entering AF1, and one he truly was heavily medicated, where he talked about waiting for word as to whether he will add more troops or remove some???

7. Cut and run is what is demanded by the Iraqi people
The only reason we are still hanging around is due to a stubborn desire by the US to control Iraq's destiny and oil resources. Can't control Iraq anymore than we can tame the wind.

9. How do you cut and run with dignity?
Edited on Wed Nov-22-06 02:07 AM by PartTimeSatanist
You don't! Once the majority understands this, evacuation of Saigon... umm.. Baghdad, will begin. It took a long time for the "enlightened" western white man to learn this simple lesson in southeast Asia.

10. "and don't let the IED hit ya on the way out" - they're really seeming to be fed up with us
maybe it really really really is just time to walk away, then work on rebuilding and reparations to whatever government arises.

14. I guess that means Ahmed Chalabi will be packing his duds........
Edited on Wed Nov-22-06 11:24 AM by 0007
Chalabi's main channel into Iraq was a small council of exiles known as the Iraqi National Congress, created by the U.S. government as the "official" opposition group to the regime of Saddam Hussein.

16. Outside of security issues, what realistically happens when we leave:
For example, the sooner we leave, the sooner international aid flows in permitting Iraqis to rebuild their own country, as opposed to US taxpayer money going to (no-bid) US contractors for the same "reason."
