Marine with deployment orders slashes arms

"Marine with deployment orders slashes arms

UNION-TRIBUNE
12:10 a.m. November 22, 2006

CARLSBAD – A 20-year-old Camp Pendleton Marine slashed his arms with a knife and led police on a short pursuit before they got him out of his car and stopped the bleeding Tuesday night.

In his car, officers found papers ordering the Marine back to Iraq, said Carlsbad police Lt. Kelly Cain.

This is going to become all too common I fear. So sad and unnecessary.

2. All he had to do was make-out with another dude. No arm-slashing necessary.
I wonder if someone will set-up gay kissing-booths in front of military bases for people who want to get out of the armed services?

My own, personal opinion.

3. Not to make light...
But that's a hell of an image there, IanDB1...the mental picture did make me snicker.

Re: the OP, I tink it's just horrible, and agree that we may see people doing more and more in desperation to avoid being shipped back to the sausage-grinder that is Iraq.

29. Better yet, go to Vermont with your best pal and have a civil union ceremony
I'd say go to Massachusetts and get married but doesn't Massachusetts have this thing where if a marriage is illegal in your home state you can't get married there.? At any rate a civil union from any state would be legal certified proof that you are indeed gay and therefore not eligible to serve in this man's army.

Send out invitations to your platoon sergeant and commanding officer--gifts optional.

Post a nice picture of yourself and your "partner" holding hands in front of the judge in the barracks and you'll be out of George Bush's army in no time.

You don't have to actually have sex (unless you want to, of course) I mean if actually having sex was a requirement for being married many heterosexual marriages would have to be annulled.

Once you're out of danger you can file for annulment or divorce.

It's far better than wearing women's clothes or other things that guys back in the Vietnam days used to try to get out of the army and much safer than faking a suicide attempt.

To all who might be offended I do have my tongue firmly in cheek with this--although if the draft is introduced I am personally paying for my daughter and her best friend to go up to Vermont and get hitched--unless the New Jersey legislature gets the court required gay marriage or civil union law together--their boyfriends can go too if they want and make it a double ceremony.

6. They've worn our soldiers out and then tossed them aside like old shoes
Edited on Wed Nov-22-06 10:40 AM by Lone_Star_Dem
All the while not giving them a real cause to cling to thus leaving them fragmented.

This is but one of the reasons why war should never be entered into lightly.

19. I agree with you. But these same soldiers will still say "We've got to defend
against terrorists" and keep voting the Republicans in. If just the FL military had voted against Bush in 2000, maybe we wouldn't HAVE a war in Iraq.

22. sigh. .
They've got to "defend their brothers against terrorists". We cannot look to the soldiers on the line for policy. It isn't their job. It is OUR job to police their bosses.

26. hard to police the bosses when you don't control exec. or leg. branch & the pres ignores the law!
When we're in the minority and control neither house nor senate nor white house, we're not very effective!! If those military folk in FL would have helped us in 2000, they might not be losing so many of their own.

12. I wonder what's happening with fragging...
in this war. We never hear about it, but with obvious troop frustration, it must be happening.

Or maybe weapons like IED's are so big that the troops see them as "acts of god" rather than the incompetence of officers in sending them into harm's way.

I know that the guy most likely to catch a stray round if I was there just got shitcanned.

14. Speaking of fragging, I heard one reason the US finally pulled out
of VIetnam was because of fraggings and desertions among the troops.

16. I doubt that it was a significant reason for pulling out, but it had policy effects.
I was drafted in 1969. It was common knowledge (although no one would ever admit it) that they sent anyone publicly opposed to the war to Viet Nam. But because of the amount of fragging, they changed that policy (again, no one would ever admit it) and started sending known war protestors elsewhere. My timing was lucky--the policy change came shortly because I got my assignment out of training. In my infantry training comapny, about 80% went directly to Nam. But the five or six known war protestors (me included) all got sent to either Germany or Korea.

I heard that infantry 2nd lieutenants in Nam had very short life expectancies, especially if they were gung ho.

18. Might be one reason there is no supervision of the troops
in Iraq. They seem free to murder, rape torture at will.
Officers have given up and or been threatened?

And when he blows away a house full of women and children, the MSM will go into full why-oh-why hand-wringing mode and demand the murderer be court martialed.

10. when the realization hits that the war you just returned from is stupid,
unnecessary and wrong, when you come to know that everything you thought was honorable service to your country was actually fueled by deceit and greed, you snap. Then you get orders to do it some more.

The war at home is just beginning. :scared:

20. I'm not sure you can attribute that to being in the military. People who *aren't*
in the military do those sorts of things. And the military is accepting people who they wouldn't have accepted even 5 years ago. It's no wonder things like raping and killing Iraqi civilians occurs - this isn't to relieve the people at the top from their responsibility (and their failure to set clear policies - or even, through their statements and policies, encouraging stuff like went on at Abu Ghraib), but as we accept into the army more and more "marginal" individuals who don't have a record of making the best decisions in their past, we should expect these sorts of behaviors. The military won't all of a sudden give these folks intelligence or common sense or an appreciation of the rules that govern a society.

He had already done his tour of duty. We keep ordering the same people back into the warzone for tour after tour after tour, and eventually something just snaps. It's like metal fatigue.

This guy was desperate.
