HoneyBaked Hams and Turkeys Recalled; May Be Contaminated With Listeria
TOLEDO -- HoneyBaked Foods of Toledo announced a voluntary recall Wednesday of some of its HoneyBaked Hams and Sliced & Glazed Turkeys. The recall covers products purchased from September 5th through November 13th at its retail location at 6145 Merger drive in Toledo -- and at three kiosks in Toledo, Maumee and Woodville.

The recall also applies to HoneyBaked Foods Hams and Sliced & Glazed Turkeys delivered to catalog customers from its Holland, Ohio, production and distribution facility.

According to the company, during routine ham product testing conducted at HoneyBaked Foods in Holland it was determined that there is a risk that certain products may be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes.

(This info came out late Wedneday, just in time for Thanksgiving -- but maybe not soon enough to protect consumers. This product was also sold on-line. Link goes to the product codes to look for.)

1. There's going to be a few people doing the Turkey Trot.....
in Toledo today. How many of these tainted hams and birds will still be consumed today? More than a few, I imagine, and the results are going to make for a Thanksgiving these people won't soon forget.
I don't know how people can buy those HoneyBaked products anyway. They're way too expensive for my tastes and not any better than homemade.

5. Honey-Baked Hams are toxic to dogs
I read in Merrill Marcoe's book (Dave Letterman's former girlfriend) how her dog pulled a Honey-Baked ham off the counter, feasted on it, and died. There's a lot of nasty stuff in there.

10. My Lab ate plenty of honey baked ham over the years and he
lived to be 13. Sure, he was overweight, but he lived a long healthy life.

I think it's more likely the dog died from the bone or bone fragments than from the ham itself.

6. AARRRGGGHHH -- why can't they test the food products BEFORE
they release them for consumption? Why does the routine testing take so long and why are they releasing the food before the results are back? Inquiring minds want to know!!!

Maybe its time for us to have some sort of "seal of approval" on food that is tested before being sent for consumption -- so that consumers know in advance if the food is truly safe to eat or not. We know that some products are safe because of the UL seal, isn't our food just as important (actually, more important) than non-food products?

I'm not affected by this recall....but it almost seems that the government and corporations truly do not care how many people they injure or kill by tainted food. Is the only way for us to have a truly safe food supply is to wait until the family members of our Congress critters die of food contamination? Is that what it is going to take before serious changes are made by our government officials -- they have to personally be affected? Sad, if true.

I don't want to have wait weeks after buying food before a recall is issued...that is so wrong. DON'T RELEASE CONTAMINATED FOOD FOR CONSUMPTION - what is so hard about that concept?

AAAARRRRGGGGGHHHH

12. Listeria is a wicked bad bug too
What are the symptoms of listeriosis?

A person with listeriosis has fever, muscle aches, and sometimes gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea or diarrhea. If infection spreads to the nervous system, symptoms such as headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, or convulsions can occur.

Infected pregnant women may experience only a mild, flu-like illness; however, infections during pregnancy can lead to miscarriage or stillbirth, premature delivery, or infection of the newborn.
