Officials deny reports of Cheney in Iraq
Nev 23, 2006

BAGDHAD, Iraq - Iraqi state television reported Thursday that Vice President Dick Cheney was in Baghdad, but U.S. officials said Cheney was not in the capital.

State-run Iraqiya TV and the private Al-Arabiya TV station reported that Cheney had arrived in the Iraqi capital on Thursday morning, apparently to visit American troops for the Thanksgiving holiday.

But Lt. Col. Christopher Garver said that the vice president was not in Iraq "as far as we know."

Maybe 5 deferments Cheney chickened out again?

1. WTF?
For some reason this has an odor.

Why the denial?

2. My guess is it was not safe enough to land in Baghdad Airport
but they don't want to admit it.

4. It's not safe enough to go to Bagdad either.

They normally lock the city down when a VIP visits.
They can't do it anymore. There's active combat
in Sadr City, not to mention that car bombing
in the Green Zone.

Shrubya is going to Jordan to meet Nouri al-Maliki
next week. That is telling.

5. They just announced a big attack
at the Baghdad health ministry too.

Don't the Iraqis know it's a holiday? :sarcasm:

14. Of course they do - it's a harvest celebration there also.
They're just helping us reap what we have sown.

3. If they gave the exact position of Cheney....
that position would cease to exist in a matter of minutes. I imagine he's on the move a lot. It's harder to hit a moving target. Just like the great decider he's not well accepted throughout the world.

11. "Cheney in Iraq" -- "Cheney not in the capital."
Word games?

They're not mutually exclusive.

12. 'Cheney will leave for Saudi Arabia on Friday.' *From where* is the question.
Vice President Cheney to visit Saudi Arabia

Wednesday, November 22, 2006

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Vice President Dick Cheney will leave for Saudi Arabia the day after Thanksgiving for talks with King Abdullah.

The vice president's office said Wednesday that Cheney would meet with Abdullah on Saturday to discuss developments in the Middle East, then return to Washington with no other stops planned.

snip

President Bush is headed to the Middle East next week to meet with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki in Jordan.

I would tend to believe the reports from the ground in Iraq that he sneaked into the area on Thanksgiving.... 'sort of in the shadows, if you will...'

13. I doubt if Cheney could handle the rapid spiral descent
into Baghdad Airport.
