France okays firing at IAF over Lebanon

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
YAAKOV KATZ and HERB KEINON, THE JERUSALEM POST Nov. 23, 2006

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

French soldiers in Lebanon who feel threatened by aggressive Israeli overflights are permitted to shoot at IAF fighter jets, a high-ranking French military officer told The Jerusalem Post.
Wednesday, several days after meeting with an IDF general in Paris to discuss what he said was a "blatant violation of the cease-fire."

Last weekend, Maj.-Gen. Ido Nehushtan, head of the IDF Planning Directorate, traveled to Paris and met with military officials to explain why the IAF flies over Lebanon despite the UN-brokered cease-fire.

Nehushtan, new to his post and previously deputy commander of the air force, told his French counterparts that Israel was conducting the flights to collect intelligence on Hizbullah positions in southern Lebanon.

According to the French officer, Nehushtan apologized for an incident on October 31 when an IAF fighter carried out a mock bombing run over a French UNIFIL position in southern Lebanon, almost prompting troops to fire anti-aircraft missiles.
"There was a reality on the ground and it was important for us to reaffirm what we had seen and explain clearly what are the orders of the French soldiers to protect themselves," the French officer said.

1. Oh my, this is not good.
To think IAF is faux-bombing UNIFIL and to think that UNIFIL is now authorized to shoot back at the IAF.

May I ask why Israel would take the risk? Don't they want peace with Lebanon?

2. These fly-overs have been occurring for the past five years
Countries in the middle east have been responding to them though diplomatic channels and their pleas have been falling upon deaf ears in Israel and the U.S., thus not going anywhere in the U.N.

<snip>
The UN and Lebanese government have both said that these overflights, which Israel has routinely conducted since 2000, violate the latest UN resolution and the previous truce which ended 22 years of Israeli occupation in Lebanon. On Sunday, Israel defiantly said that its combat planes will continue to fly over Lebanon.

I cannot comment further other than to say it seems odd to lock one without the other. Might be best to re-post in general discussion.

5. If the story is over 12 hours old, it is not LBN, per the posted rules.
Both the links in this OP and the post that was locked are dated 11/23 -- so maybe they fall outside of the 12 hour rule.

I wouldn't bother posting this in GD, however. It will just be locked out of GD and shunted off to the I/P forum.

6. I'd wondered about that -
the "I Pee" forum I mean. Such things are odd when it affects a country outside of those two as is the case here -namely France. That's a situation which couldn't really persist if the French did , quite deservedly, shoot down an Israeli aircraft.

7. Well, I don't make the rules, I just know what happens.
I have protested vehemently -- and to no avail -- when posts of mine were dragged off to the I/P dungeon.

The easiest rule of thumb is this: If your post contains the word "Israel", and is posted somewhere other than the I/P forum, expect it to be either locked or moved unless it strictly conforms to LBN rules.

4. I think this is called "self-defense?"
Israelis are not supposed to be flying over Lebanon and the peacekeepers there are risking their lives and are justified in shooting back at any planes shooting at them.

12. Especially as Israel has killed peacekeepers not too long ago...
I think France is well within it's rights to shoot at any Israeli jets doing these fly-overs. Israel is not abiding by the terms or spirit of the cease-fire when it behaves in this manner. If Israel is wise the fly-overs will stop and they will let the peace-keepers get on with their jobs unharrassed...

8. its about time!
I am jewish and I think Israel and the zionofacists are completely out of control, this type of behaviour against the international forces they were demanding is completely unacceptable.
