U.S.: Recent Iraq violence aimed at toppling gov't

WASHINGTON, Nov 24 (Reuters) - The White House said on Friday car bombs in a Shi'ite stronghold of Baghdad that killed 202 people and retaliatory attacks afterward were brazen acts aimed at destabilizing Iraq's government.

"These ruthless acts of violence are deplorable. It is an outrage that these terrorists are targeting innocents in a brazen effort to topple a democratically elected government. These killers will not succeed," White House spokesman Scott Stanzel said.

The bombing on Thursday in the Shi'ite stronghold of Sadr City marked the deadliest attack since U.S.-led forces toppled Saddam Hussein's government in 2003.

Gunmen seeking revenge then rampaged through a Sunni enclave in Baghdad, burning mosques and killing dozens of people.

5. The White House is in a blind, ideologically based bubble. The world knows it,
The US knows it, and the Iraqis know it only too well. Don't know what the outcome of this anarchy will be for Iraq, or the ME, but reality sorely needs a seat at the Administration's table.

6. That is to say
they won't succeed in toppling this government unless we want them to topple this government.

7. Toppling the Iraqi government?
The White House is shocked that anyone would even contemplate such a course of action.

8. duh. and getting the US troops out. and expressing discontent with each other.
Saddam had this under control by keeping everyone scared sh*tless. he knew how to handle the different tribes being in constant conflict, but bushco never even considered that they might be unleashing a total Pandora's box by toppling Sadam... it's like a room full of mousetraps.

11. Juan Cole reports that the assault on the Green Zone is imminent
Apparently, the insurgency believes it can take the Green Zone -- it's just a matter of picking the date:
Another friend, a Sunni sheikh of the Shammar tribe noted to me that thousands of former officers are prepared to assault the Green Zone. It is no longer a matter of can they do it, they are only mulling over the timing. The breach of the Green Zone security the other day was a test of their ability to get in, and not a real attempt at a coup, though it is reported as such. Every Iraqi I talk to says unambiguously that the resistance attached to the former regime would take out the Shiite militias with barely a fight, but that the resistance will not commit wholesale revenge against the Shiite population. They just want to get rid of the "carpet baggers" from Iran. http://www.juancole.com/2006/11/233-dead-in-civil-war-carnage-health.html
