US and Iraqi government want civil war, says Sunni leader

Nov 25, 2006

Cairo - An influential Sunni religious leader accused the US and the Iraqi government Saturday of wanting Iraq to slip into a civil war.

Sheikh Harith al-Dhari, head of the Association of Moslem Scholars (AMS), the highest Sunni authority in Iraq, told reporters in Cairo that the US and the Iraqi administration have fomented tensions between Iraqis in order to bring about civil war and divide the country.

He accused the Shiite-dominated government of Iraqi Premier Nuri al-Maliki of protecting militias and lawbreakers, meaning Sunnis had to take up arms to protect themselves. However, he said the majority of people in Iraq reject violence between Sunnis and Shiites.

Al-Dhari said the US-led occupation has destroyed 'the state, the people and the institutions of Iraq' and he called on the international community to withdraw its recognition of the Iraqi administration.

2. Civil wars always have unpredictable outcomes
Anyone that entertains any notions that they can control events, will find themselves in a rude awakening.

3. blame it on the invader
in the circumstances what else can they do but blame the invader to deflect vengance from each other. It would be worse if he was saying 'kill the Shiites'. They should make him co-president with Malaki

4. evidently this guy has NO influence on his peers, so he is blaming
others. well others are certainly contributing their share, but how much influence is the Association of Muslim Scholars contributing to the solution, and MORE importantly, how much did they butt kiss saddam to gain influence in the saddam days? Did this guy lead the underground revolt against saddam in the name of his religion, or perhaps the AMS is a bunch of sore losers.

At least I am glad to know it is all the shiites fault and the sunnis have no blame in this mess.
