Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-Md., who becomes House Majority Leader in January, said Saturday that Democrats will restore civility to Congress.
Delivering the Democratic Party response to President George W. Bush's weekly radio address, Hoyer said Democrats would work with Bush to "forge a new direction in Iraq."
"On Nov. 7, millions of Americans, in every region of our country, voted their hopes -- not their fears," Hoyer said. "And, they sent a resounding message: They want change and a new direction for our nation."
Hoyer laid out once again the legislative agenda described by incoming Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. It includes implementing the recommendations of the Sept. 11, 2001, commission; raising the minimum wage; providing college assistance for the middle class; allowing the federal government to negotiate lower drug prices under Medicare Part D; and reducing deficit spending.
