Nobel winner says spend on women, not bombs

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Iranian Nobel Peace Prize winner Shirin Ebadi said on Saturday nations with nuclear capabilities should spend money to stop exploitation of women instead of making bombs.

The lawyer, in India to promote women's rights, said governments often said they lacked the funds to improve women's lives, but added that they had no financial constraints when it came to manufacturing nuclear bombs.

"I think no country needs bombs -- not India, Pakistan, Iran, America or Israel," Ebadi said through a translator at a news conference in New Delhi.

Ebadi, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2003, said poverty was the main reason why women became sex workers and that no one would sell their body for the pleasure of others unless they were in dire financial need.

5. Did you notice that Ebadi is against women selling their bodies?

Just checking. . .

The idea is to spend money to train women for jobs so they don't turn to prostitution.

We've already seen that the best use of aid money in Africa is when it goes directly to small businesses run by women.

21. African women would feed their families. What do men spend it on?
Based on the current situation in Africa, it appears that men (who control almost all the money there) too often spend it on weapons, booze, and sex.

And that's the logic behind lending micro-business loans primarily to women.

"African women food farmers labour up to twice as long per week as their male counterparts - producing, processing, and transporting virtually all of Africa's food.

But yet these primary producers own only about one percent of the land. They also receive less than 7.0 percent of farm extension services, and less than 10 percent of the agricultural credit available to small farmers."

23. yeah, making jokes about buying women is fine

Pointing out that delivering aid to women in developing countries works because they use it to feed and shelter their families and don't divert it to the black market to make money ... to buy women ... is bigotry.

Oh. Maybe that was a joke.

10. Jihadis and whores

Jihadis and whores
By Spengler

Wars are won by destroying the enemy's will to fight. A nation is never really beaten until it sells its women.

The proliferation of Iranian prostitutes in Western Europe as well as the Arab world helps explain the country's population trends. The European Commission's most comprehensive surveys of human trafficking found that Iranian women made up 10-15% of the prostitutes working in Belgium, the Netherlands and Italy. <2> "Fatima" from Persia has become as familiar as "Natasha" from Belarus. Iranian whores long have been a scandal in the Arab states of the Persian Gulf, which periodically round up and expel them.

It is hard to obtain reliable data on prostitution inside Iran itself, but anecdotal evidence suggests that it has increased since Ahmadinejad became president last year. Anti-regime sociologists claim that at least 300,000 women are whoring in Tehran alone. The ADNKronos website reported on April 25:
Prostitution is on the rise in Iran ... Sociologist Amanollah Gharaii Moghaddam told ADNKronos International (AKI) that he believes Iran's deteriorating economy and the high unemployment rate among youths to be the main causes of this worrying phenomenon. In Iran, 28% of young people between the ages of 15 and 29 are unemployed ... The age of prostitutes is increasingly younger, and girls as young as 12 are selling their bodies on Iran's streets. Overall, the number of prostitutes is also on the rise and there are an estimated 300,000 of them in Tehran alone ... Nevertheless, Gharaii Moghaddam says "the number isn't so high when compared the 4 million unemployed only in Tehran and the 5 million drug addicts today in Iran".
The clerical regime vacillates between repressing prostitution and sanctioning it through "temporary marriages", an arrangement permitted under Shi'ite jurisprudence. In the latter case the Muslim clergy in effect become pimps, taking a fee for sanctioning several "temporary marriages" per women per day.

These numbers cannot be verified, to be sure, but the spillover of Iranian prostitutes into Western Europe and the Gulf states suggests that the actual numbers must be very large indeed, so large, in fact, as to help explain the frightful rate of Iran's demographic decline. Along with Albanian, Chechen and Bosnian women, Iranian prostitutes are living evidence of the dissolution of the traditional Muslim society that purports to shield women from degradation.

Found NOTHING (ZERO!) about Iranian prostitutes but, in alternative,
found that CIA's "news" are in parallel with the Agency "intelligence":

Just read the EU Report cited in the article and available here too:
http://www.ontheroadonlus.it/rootdown//RapIppocra.pdf and use
that intelligent "Find" option of Adobe Acrobat with the word "Iran".

Only reference to Iran in the Report statistics is on Table 2 of page 104.
More precisely reported in only one of the three researched countries: Belgium
and with these iranian trends... Sexual = 0%; Economic = 0%; Smuggling = 8%
(BTW, before argue with other report values please read about what they mean!)

That Asia Times "article" is a TOTAL BULLSH*T !!!

Yeah... indeed!
BTW, that Trinity Site in the final of your message is where?
With such citizen's "protection" I believe that should be "outside" USA, right?
Or the device used in that site was one of "special" type: a non-radioactive "NUKULAR" device?

About your link to the Grandmother Bomber news... SELECTIVE reading IT IS NOT a "GIFT"!
"... At the compound where her extended family lives near Jebaliya camp,
her oldest daughter Fatheya explained the bomber's motives.
"They (Israelis) destroyed her house, they killed her grandson — my son.
Another grandson is in a wheelchair with an amputated leg," she said.

Female suicide bombers were a rarity during the first several years of
the current Israeli-Palestinian conflict, but that has gradually changed..."

27. tragic cynicsm
We in 2006 send our women to die, worldwide, as cluster bombs,
carrying many eggs that are their own munitions, and the
angst, the rebellion, is born in that afterbirth,
the angry tears of the mother giving life,
and taking life, injustice.

We are living munitions, you and i, and the question is
whether we become wise before we detonate.

Cluster bombs across the planet,
strapped in to woman is the choice,
for thy womb commandeth love.

18. How would you spend YOUR Nobel Prize money?

In all honesty, there are feminists who argue that prostitution is an honest business; women being paid for doing something they don't normally like, having sex with men. I think there's truth in that; but it's also true that those feminists have never known any real-world prostitutes.

Until they get their stories straight, and figure out what they really mean, I suggest that Nobel prize winners, feminist philosophers and other gadflies shouldn't really make such observations. I don't like prostitution myself, and think it's a horror, but that's from life experience, not something that was read in Harper's.

24. in agreement -- except for the part you misread?

What the Nobel prize winner in question said:
Ebadi, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2003, said poverty was the main reason why women became sex workers and that no one would sell their body for the pleasure of others unless they were in dire financial need.

I don't think you disagree.

One might add: unless they were in dire need of a fix. Prostitution, in North American cities, is essentially a way of getting stupid, piggish men to hand their money over to organized crime, by paying the prostitutes who pay the dealers. And my neighbourhood for one -- low income, heavily populated by recent immigrants, many children on the streets -- gets to pay the price in all the social costs that come with the constant presence of drug-addicted prostitutes, their dealers and their johns, none of whom give a shit about the comfort or safety of anyone else in the vicinity.

As a feminist and a rational person, I don't advocate prosecuting the prostitutes, but I want to see the hell prosecuted and publicized out of the johns and dealers.

29. Agreed, and for a personal reason.
I was shocked to learn that my older brother - whom I never had much love for anyway - had committed some cheap crimes in his teenage years. Why? To patronize prostitutes. Finding that out drove the final wedge between me and him. I may attend his funeral, but I'll avoid dealing with him in any other way if I can.

To hire a prostitute is to make another person your slave. It also indicates that you haven't accepted the fact that you're ugly and unlikeable and don't deserve to have sex. (Which I have accepted, and my brother hasn't.)

19. man says 'lets invent nukes and we'll be invincible'
get rid of nukes and help women around the world, good idea
I don't think prostitution is only caused by poverty though becuase the ones I've engaged in conversation with were kind of impressive and independant. True, at the street level things are different and many are suffering like he is saying, but I've met some educated, intelligent women who happened to be doing this.. what were they like? I noticed a hard, rough edge but a soft side shining through, and it seemed to me they know men better than many understand, if it was up to me I'd ask them what they think we should do about nukes, since they know men they understand the primeval urges that send them on wild goose chases

30. STILL FIGHTING IN FLORIDA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE HELP
This is YOUR CHANCE TO SAVE OUR COUNTRY and help get rid of this demonic voting system. Okay Democrats aren’t the only one’s who care about votes being counted in the manner in which they were intended to be cast. I WAS A REGISTERED REPUBLICAN AS WAS CLINT CURTIS! Having Volunteered in the last four elections and following the “ANOMOLIES” I have NO DOUBT our “elections” are smoke and mirrors thanks to diebold and the like. The republicans in office DO NOT REPRESENT ME OR ANY TRUE REPUBLICAN (as in the one’s who delivered freedom to the slaves). PLEASE HELP CLINT CURTIS WIN HIS FIGHT AGAINST REPUBLICAN CONGRESSMAN TOM FEENEY WHO ASKED HIM (Clint) to WRITE A VOTE FLIPPING PROGRAM WHICH WOULD FLIP THE VOTES 51% to 49% in favor of the REPUBLICANS! If you paid attention to the past four elections and even 2006 you’d know SOMETHING’S FISHY ESPECIALLY IN FLORIDA. The Ukraine exit polls were closer to actual results than ours and our state department funded the Ushenko challenge yet in the U.S. we’d rather fudge or get rid of the exit polls?? Clint has 3 separate data sources all indicating he had 80% of the vote including republican votes and Feeney still wins?? I DON’T THINK SO. PLEASE HELP. YOUR COUNTRY, YOUR DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC NEEDS YOU. CLINT NEEDS YOU. HE TURNED DOWN TWO (ONE MILLION DOLLAR) BRIBES FROM FEENEY TO FIGHT FOR US. LET’S HELP HIM. Thanks

If you can help by being boots on ground we want you, but if not every penny helps contribute here.
https://www.completecampaigns.com/public.asp?name=CurtisClint&page=1
CONTESTING THE “OFFICIAL RESULTS”

OK, EVERYONE!

NOW IS THE TIME TO MAKE YOUR MARK ON HISTORY!

Clint and several other Florida candidates are going to VERIFY THEIR VOTES! As Thomas Jefferson said, “All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent.”

Clint is not one to keep silent. And I know YOU are not silent!

Clint has not conceded. In fact, he has a way to analyze the Official Vote Count and determine where to focus our efforts to get votes the verified. This will be at minimal financial cost. We just need Feet on the Street!

That is where YOU come in. The good news it is Thanksgiving Week…and the bad news it is Thanksgiving week. Yup, you guessed it, the State picks this time of year to give you 10 days to determine whether you want to Contest the election. So we have 10 days to get the signatures we need to determine if the machines counted accurately.

The result from your efforts could be a recall or new election. Best of all it could bring about permanently getting rid of the flawed electoral system! Clint has been fighting for free and fair elections for over five years. NOW he has the opportunity to MAKE IT HAPPEN!

Once we receive the official data on the results of the election, we will be knocking on doors of Independents and Democrats in targeted precincts to get signatures verifying the Governor’s race, Congressional race and Proposition Three. We need you ready to spring into action.

We just need 2 hours of your time one evening this week or during the day Friday (when many people have off) , Saturday or Sunday and again next week. Let me know you are ready to spring into action by giving me a call 954-732-1112 or email marty@go-nci.com. As soon as we get the data, I will call you to help CHANGE THE VOTING SYSTEM once and for all by helping us verify the vote! With YOU on the team, we can do it!

Contact me at marty@go-nci.com

Thanks!

–Marty
