Jordan King: 3 Mideast Civil Wars Possible in 2007
http://www.abcnews.go.com/ThisWeek/story?id=2679914&page=2

STEPHANOPOULOS: Is it a civil war in Iraq right now?

KING ABDULLAH: Well, George, the difficulty that we're tackling with here is, we're juggling with the strong potential of three civil wars in the region, whether it's the Palestinians, that of Lebanon or of Iraq.

And I hope that my discussions, at least, with the president will be to provide whatever we can do for the Iraqi people. But at the same time, we do want to concentrate ourselves on the core issues, which we believe are the Palestinians and the Palestinian peace process, because that is a must today, as well as the tremendous concern we've had over the past several days, what's happening in Lebanon.

And we could possibly imagine going into 2007 and having three civil wars on our hands. And therefore, it is time that we really take a strong step forward as part of the international community and make sure we avert the Middle East from a tremendous crisis that I fear, and I see could possibly happen in 2007.

3. While GWB has fucked up royally...
He's really only kicked over the hornet's nest.

As much as some in the ME want to kill Israelis, the US, westerners, one of their big objectives is to destroy Muslims who are too "west leaning" and bring down secular governments in the ME, such as the Saudis, Egypt, and Jordan.

These wars were coming, but GWB might have made it easier for the bad guys to get a foot hold.

Thanks George!

4. He evaded some questions
and thinks Iraq is third priority below Lebanon and Palestine which are not even in a civil war, why does he think this will happen?
It seems Jordan is giving the same line as Blair, i.e. Iraq is not the problem, it's Palestine, Iraq doesn't matter. I find it worrying these Arab kings peddle the same trash as the west. They really are as dumb as the neo-cons about the angry mobs seeing them kiss Bush's ass and getting madder
I bet Cheney said to the Saudi's 'your Sunnis', you should rule this region', divide and rule is the reason for this civil war, these kings are not clever

13. why is that..?
King Abdullah seemed very solid to me in the recent years.
And he manages to keep his peaceful, prosperous and free of extremists.
Also his daughter(s?)/princess seems very educated and often represent the country.

Just wondering...

King of Jordan Speaks Out About Iraqi Situation

By Lexie Verdon
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, November 26, 2006; 2:42 PM

King Abdullah of Jordan, who will host a meeting between President Bush and Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki this week, said today that the situation in Iraq is quickly disintegrating and dramatic action is needed before the end of the year to unify the country.

The king also said that no serious progress can be made on Iraq's problems until a solution to the Israeli-Palestinian issues is found.

"We have to make sure that all the parties in Iraq understand the dangers of the ongoing escalation, and I hope that Prime Minister Maliki will have some ideas . . . bringing all the different sects inside of Iraq together," Abdullah told George Stephanopoulos on ABC's "This Week." "And they need to do it now, because, obviously, as we're seeing, things are beginning to spiral out of control."

In what may have been a warning to the Bush administration about waiting too long to hear from a high-ranking, bipartisan panel looking for options on Iraq policy, the king stressed that speed is essential. "I don't think we're in a position where we can come back and revisit the problem in early 2007," he said. "There needs to be a strategy. There needs to be a plan that brings all the parties together, and bring them today and not tomorrow."

9. no progress on Iraq until a solution to the Israel-Palestinian problem...
...is found. The U.S. routinely ignores this, while it is axiomatic in the region. This is such a glaring disjunct between U.S. foreign policy and the events it seeks to influence. It is the 800 lb gorilla that everyone is trying so hard to ignore.

10. Glad another Arab leader is speaking up, fwiw. Another snip:
Mideast leaders, the king said, are "juggling with the strong potential of three civil wars in the region, whether it's the Palestinians, that of Lebanon or of Iraq."

He added that he was concerned about the lack of progress on Palestinian issues in recent months. "I don't believe that beyond mid-2007, if we don't get the process going, there will be anything of a Palestine to talk about," Abdullah said. "And therefore, do we resign this whole region to another decade or two of violence, which none of us can afford?"
