Islamic militant leader kills himself
Nov 28, 2006

JDEIDET YABOUS, Syria - The leader of an Islamic militant group blew himself up at a border post near Lebanon on Tuesday after a gunbattle with security forces that left two of them wounded, the Syrian government said.

Omar Abdullah, 28, the leader of a militant organization Tawhid and Jihad, was challenged when he tried to cross into Lebanon with fake documents, the Interior Ministry said.

A witness said Abdullah was standing outside the passport control building when security agents approached. He opened fire with a handgun, wounding two, then ran toward the nearby village of Kfeir Yabous about 500 yards away.

More security forces arrived, started shooting and apparently hit the gunman, said the witness, who spoke on condition of anonymity out of fear of reprisals. The attacker raised one hand in a gesture of surrender, but used the other to detonate an explosives belt.

6. Maybe he felt it was better to die
than be taken by the enemy.

Wasn't there a famous Jewish story with a similar theme?

3. Maybe if one of your kids turned themselves into chunky salsa,..
you might think it other than Excellent.

It's that sort of thinking that keeps this shit happening again and again and again.

I do not condone the actions of Islamic extremists, but I can understand at least a little why they do it.

Various colonial interests, instead of dragging their conquests (kicking and screaming if necessary) into the 19th & 20th Centuries when they had their chance, did their level best to keep them firmly enmeshed in the 12th in order to maximize the amount they could loot.

Take a look at where the worst of this sort of violence is occurring around the world today, Congo/Rwanda, much of the Middle East, the various 'stans. Moneyed interests act as if it's their God's given right to take that which is not theirs and if the local object, get one's government to bomb the fuck out of them. And finally jump up and down and try to claim the moral high ground when those locals (who lack access to million dollar silicon guided smart bombs) turn themselves into organic smart bombs and hit back.

4. wow
one of the few things I approve of that these extremists do. Wish more would do the same without taking innocent people out with them. Pathetic.

Playing the fool (symptomatically) is why we are in Iraq today... not going well is it?

7. I refer you to this post of mine
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=364&topic_id=2818596&mesg_id=2818665

In this particular case, the suspected terrorist (which, since he was carrying false papers, a pistol, and a suicide bomb, and shot two guards who were trying to arrest him, means he was guilty of something pretty damn serious!) blew himself up rather than be captured, I think the result was quite excellent, except for the wounded guards.

Terrorist dead. Nobody else killed. Including my son. Or yours. If he had detonated that bomb and turned other people besides him into chunky salsa, then the terrorist whould have started another chain of revenge that keeps this shit happening again and again and again

Now, this is not ideal, because he was not captured, questioned, tried, or imprisoned, but this is a close second in my book. I would rather the equivilent of an Iraqi District Attorney cut him a deal in exchance for information, but solo chunky salsa works almost as well.

I understand quite well why they do it. I'm not some knuckle-dragging neocon grunting "They hate us for our freedoms". Regardless how correct their concerns and grievences, and how FUCKING STUPID BushCo was to get us into this mess, what they are doing (shooting, torture, suicide and homicide bombings) must be stopped. And it must be stopped in two ways: on a local, tactical level, using police to infiltrate and arrest terrorist groups, and on a strategic level by making nice with the rest of the world, alleviating the root causes of terrorism, eating a big ole hunk of humble pie, and throwing the fuckers responsible for this debacle in a cell someplace.

9. Just because
I am against the Israeli and Western policies in that region does not mean I think any more highly of the Palestinian and fundamentalist Islamic ideas and policies.

As far as I am concerned the two factions can blow themselves up together and take their sick twisted ideologies with them.

The world would be a better place.
