1. From the link:
"Five girls have been killed in Iraq during a clash between US marines and insurgents in the western city of Ramadi, the US has said.
A US military statement said militants on the roof of a house had fired on its forces, who responded with tank fire.

It said soldiers searching the building found the bodies of one man and the five girls, one of whom was an infant."

23. You betcha they won't report it
Just like they didn't report the downed plane yesterday. Watched two evening newscasts for some mention of the downed plane, but they had other important news instead. For instance, did you know Americans are fat?

Five girls killed in Iraqi clash

Five girls have been killed in Iraq during a clash between US marines and insurgents in the western city of Ramadi, the US has said.
A US military statement said militants on the roof of a house had fired on its forces, who responded with tank fire.

It said soldiers searching the building found the bodies of one man and the five girls, one of whom was an infant.

Ramadi, 115km (70 miles) west of Baghdad, is located in Anbar province, a stronghold for Sunni militants.http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/6193620.stm

12. This is happening while the big blowhard is running his mouth that
he won't withdraw from Iraq in his speech in Riga, Latvia.

Isn't anyone else embarrassed by his posturing while demanding help from other countries? He could have made his remarks in the US and saved a ton of jet fuel and millions of tax payer's dollars.

17. AP says "five females ranging in age from an infant to teenagers"
Probably echoing the Pentagon phrasing:

Gunbattle in Iraq leaves 6 Iraqis dead

BAGHDAD, Iraq - U.S. Marines fought with suspected insurgents in Ramadi on Tuesday, and the battle left six Iraqis dead, including five females ranging in age from an infant to teenagers, the U.S. military said.

The fighting began after a coalition patrol discovered a roadside bomb in the Hamaniyah section of Ramadi, and two men fled to a house, where they took up positions on the roof, the military said.

As coalition forces removed the bomb, the suspected insurgents opened fire on the U.S. Marines, who fought back with machine guns and tanks, the statement said.

Afterward, coalition forces searched the house and found the six bodies, the military said. Another female also was wounded but refused treatment, it said.

One of the gunmen may have been wounded and removed from the scene by other militants, the statement said, adding that there were no coalition casualties.

The military quoted residents as saying the building "was a known anti-Iraqi force safe house."

Ramadi, 70 miles west of Baghdad, is located in Anbar province, where many Sunni-Arab insurgent groups are based. It has been the scene of some of the fiercest fighting between Marines and insurgents.

"In a very tragic way, today reminds us that insurgents' actions throughout Iraq are felt by all," said Marine Lt. Col. Bryan Salas, a military spokesman. "Efforts are under way to coordinate and offer available assistance to surviving family members."

Which just goes to prove how well our military is learning -- from the Israelis. Pass the ammo and pass the buck.

> One of the gunmen may have been wounded and removed from the scene
> by other militants, the statement said,

I love these "missing guilty person" reports. So convincing.

> The military quoted residents as saying the building
> "was a known anti-Iraqi force safe house."

As only Iraqis were killed & injured and the killing/injuring was done
by non-Iraqis, it necessarily follows that the real anti-Iraqi forces
were the ones in the tank ...

19. It's a no-win situation
We don't know yet if the man on the roof had a rifle or an RPG, so I'll withhold judgement on the appropriateness of firing the main gun, BUT:

Tank commanders usually drive with their torsos sticking out of the turret hatch, so they can see. The man on the roof may have been shooting at the tank commander, forcing him to duck inside the tank. If the hatch was still open, that leaves the possibility of bullets entering the tank and ricocheting around, or a Molotov cocktail or hand grenade through hatch, giving the crew a good reason to take out the shooter ASAP.

If the guy on the roof had fired an RPG and missed, he might well have been reloading or grabbing another loaded RPG. An RPG shot into the thinner top armor of a tank might well penetrate the armor, so the tank crew has a powerful incentive to take out the threat as quickly as possible, and the main gun on a small building will do that, in spades.

Damn Bush for getting us in this in the first place, and damn that shooter for putting the tank crew in this situation!

20. According to Bush, there is no fighting outside of Baghdad
NBC's First Read reports that the response was swift: "The White House is objecting this morning to descriptions of the Iraq conflict as a civil war. National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe said, 'The violence is primarily centered around Baghdad and Baghdad security and the increased training of Iraqi Security Forces is at the top of the agenda when meet later this week.'"
