NY Daily News: Senator Schumer: Reaganism Is Dead
Schumer: Reaganism Is Dead

(Senator Charles Schumer, D., NY) swung by the Daily News for an editorial board meeting this morning, which you'll be able to read more about in tomorrow's News.

A couple of tidbits from his broader discussion (forthcoming in book form) of how he sees the shifting terrain and the Democrats' edge struck me:

"We're in better shape than (Republicans) are, because they don't realize that Reaganomics is dead, that the Reagan philosophy is dead," he said. "We realize that New Deal democracy, which is still our paradigm, which is sort of appeal to each group ... that doesn't work any more."

He had said a bit earlier, "The old Reagan theory which dominated -- which is, 'Government is bad, it's out of touch, chop off its hands as soon as it moves.' -- is over."...

1. Not yet, it ain't.
Privatization still lives.

Media monopoly still lives.

So many nasty nasty things that Reagan brought us, like homelessness, are still with us.

Wait a minute: New Deal doesn't work anymore??????? Don't make me read the damn article.

2. Reaganism isn't dead.
It won't be properly cured until we truly understand how it is caused, how the degeneration can be brought to a full stop, and a way is found to replace the brain matter that has deteriorated, and that will probably require large-scale stem cell research.

In Europe we call it Alzheimer's, by the way.

4. So, when we find the cure for Reaganism
...do you think it will also prove effective on Thatcherism?

10. I HOPE SO!!!
Thatcherism is a dreadful disease, which has infected even members of groups which had been previously thought to have a natural immunity to the disorder, e.g. the Labour Party.

It can't be cured too soon for me!

15. Sort of a NEO-plasm there.
You can always tell by that "New" label. Neocons, New Labor, etc. Never a good sign.

3. It needs to be....
"Big" government is not the enemy when it serves the people, and not the corporations.

6. More "Worship The Triangle" DLC Crapola
He's also saying that the "New Deal", FDR's struggle to level the playing field for the Middle Class, is over.

His patrons in the Predator Class will be very pleased.

7. Schumer is too optimistic
Reaganism isn't dead. It's sustained a knockdown and is now getting a standing eight count, but it won't be dead so long as Karl Rove, Dick Cheney, Grover Norquist and the neoconservative cabal are alive and well.

The Democrats will have to finish Reaganism off by accomplishing things that get the public firmly on their side. All the stuff that the progressive websites and blogs say "should" be done -- or at least some of them -- will have to get done, or Americans will soon think of Democrats as liberals who are "full of should."

I hope the Democrats don't take this squeak-through victory as some kind of sign that the game is over the their ("our"?} side is now the winner and undisputed champion. The Reagan Republicans are Night of the Living Dead. Whatever is done to them, they'll keep coming back, and the stakes are high. The recent elections staved off for now the incipient totalitarianism, but the torturers are still out there with an undimmed desire to put all progressives (and quasi-radical progressives, like me) into re-education camps.

8. Careful there, Chuck
He's going to reacquaint all of those 'Reagan Democrats' with Newt if he's not careful. The Cons are implementing a Resurrect Reagan Project for 2008 and we need to have a better strategy of combatting that than a smug dismissal.

9. Is he equating Reaganism and the New Deal?
If so, I don't like that thought at all.

11. Schumer is attempting to salvage the elitist program...
Edited on Wed Nov-29-06 01:11 PM by NorthernSpy
... by pruning off one especially unsound branch ("Reaganism") and conceding it to the bonfire.

But unfortunately for Schumer and the DLC, today's tide against them. Americans take an increasingly dim view of the neolibs and neocons. The "free trade" they crammed down our throats has destroyed the economy for working class Americans, and "spreading democracy" just got a whole lot of people killed for no good reason. Populism carried the day on Nov 7th. The DLC's moment has passed.

16. Chuck, what the fuck are you smoking?
Reaganomics ain't dead. It has too much appeal to anti-tax, anti-regulatory pukes. It puts a slick name on selfish assholish behavior.

Chuck, pass that over here !! That shit must be good.

This stuff will come ROARING back as soon as the economy picks up again under the next Dem leadership and the population starts feeling rich again and overburdened by the requirements of the state.

Always does.

Chuck, I don't know why you spouted this nonsense, but it sure does make you look like a dumbass.
