Al Qaeda tries to foment Iraq civil war - U.S. general

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Attacks in Iraq carried out by al Qaeda are "specifically designed to create a civil war," the top U.S. general said on Wednesday.

Gen. Peter Pace, chairman of the military Joint Chiefs of Staff, echoed U.S. President George W. Bush in playing down growing signs that Iraq is already engulfed in civil war and instead accused al Qaeda of fomenting sectarian bloodshed.

"The Iraqi government does not call it a civil war," he told reporters. "Two, the Iraqi government is functioning.

"Three, the Iraqi security forces are responsive to the Iraqi government," he added. "Four, the level of violence that is being inflicted by al Qaeda and the like is specifically designed to create a civil war."

Sound familiar?

<snip>

PRESIDENT BUSH: You know, the plans of Mr. Zarqawi was to foment sectarian violence. That's what he said he wanted to do. The Samarra bombing that took place last winter was intended to create sectarian violence, and it has. The recent bombings were to perpetuate the sectarian violence. In other words, we've been in this phase for a while. And the fundamental objective is to work with the Iraqis to create conditions so that the vast majority of the people will be able to see that there's a peaceful way forward.

3. What is the river that
runs through Egypt? These guys do not want to face the fact that various factions are fighting for control of Iraq. This is not about terrorism it is about civil war and the use of terrorist tactics to succeed. I think they should stop insulting our intelligence. If they don't then let the investigations begin!

4. Wo General slow down and let this Hog catch up
So according to the senior Military Officer of the United States a powerful faction is putting every ounce of energy into "fomenting" a civil war in Iraq and has been doing so for quite some time and yet that general's boss says there is no civil war in Iraq.

Please would one of the great philosophers and statesmen of foreign policy, diplomacy and military doctrine from the free republic jump in here and splain things.

5. Another Iraq "Myth"
The 6 o'clock news last night (I believe it was ABC?) reported Bush's and General Pace's statement regarding Al-Queda and Iraq. Amazingly, the news media actually proceeded to debunk this new "talking point" being proffered by Bush et. al and reported that only 2-3% of the fighters are estimated to belong to Al-Queda in Iraq. If they are singlehandedly responsible for "fomenting" the CIVIL WAR currently going on over there, then they have been rather effective in doing so with those (estimated) numbers.

8. It's sort of true because to them Al-qaeda has become a general term for 'bad guys' or 'the enemy'
or 'evildoers'.

In other words, the term 'al-qaeda' is meaningless.

9. maybe
'al-qaeda' means "Saudi Arabia's interests".

(Which can also be Bush/Cheney interests).

10. Agreed
"Al-Queda" or "Terrorists" have become the new "Communists" or agents seeking to undermine our way our life.

11. And the word shall be ... foment
I guess a few of them have gotten the memo.

Honestly, Bush used it so much yesterday that I'm convinced it was a new word to him. What a fuckwit.

12. ya think?
Oh and by the looks of it we have decided to go whole hog for the fomenting thing as well.

Pace should stand up and demand that his troops be taken out of this mess.

13. Pace doesn't give a rat's ass about the troops
Pace is nothing more then a yes man, his loyalty, like Hayden's is to Bush not to the Constitution or to the American people.

Pace, Hayden, the Joint Chiefs, Abizaid and Casey, are in my opinion, nothing more then the reincarnation of those generals that followed Hitler, they ask no questions and tow the party line, and sit back and watch while the men and women under their command die, and tell pretty stories to those true believers that still buy into the "Iraq attacked the US" myth!!!!

None of these so called "leaders" said or did anything when the troops didn't have body armor or lack
of armored HUMVEE to provide some protection from IED's, they haven't said anything about the low standard of support that's provided by Halliburton, or the lack of safe drinking water.

Pace and his crew are lining their road to retirement with the flesh and blood of the troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, when they retire they'll all get cushy jobs as consultants, while that kid
with the missing limbs will be waiting for 6 months before he gets to see a doctor at a VA center.

I cannot even describe the complete disgust that I have for Pace and the other "Hitler's Generals", that go along and do nothing.

End of rant.

14. I read this article this morning...
...and I was stunned. Apparently this guy is either lying or so incompetent that he should be removed from the position which he holds.

Unfortunately, the RWs will jump on this and think that this is something either true or factual or both. And...that will just further ingrain the notion that Al Qaeda was somehow in Iraq...yada, yada...and responsible for the present situation in that country.

I found his statement to be disgusting and found it to be so on many levels.
