Guantanamo prisoner transfers coordinated in Germany: US army

The American military on Friday confirmed media reports that the south-German based US European military headquarters (EUCOM) staged the transfer of terror suspects to the notorious Guantanamo prisoner camp.

"We have transported prisoners," EUCOM spokesman John Tomassi told the daily Stutgarter Zeitung.

"And we had announced it on the same day," added the US official who referred to a press statement released on January 18, 2002 which reported that six Algerian terror suspects had been taken from Bosnia to "a safe location".

The German press quoted UN special rapporteur on torture, Manfred Nowak earlier this month as saying that confidential US pointed out that the transport of terror suspects to Guantanamo were prepared at the EUCOM base in the southern city of Stuttgart.

The UN official referred also to the case of six Algerian terror suspects who were kidnapped to Guantanamo after being accquitted by Bosnia's highest court in January 2002 on terrorist charges.

The Pentagon called them "among the most dangerous, best-trained, vicious killers on the face of the earth," sweeping them up after Sept. 11 and hauling them in chains to a U.S. military prison in southeastern Cuba.

Since then, hundreds of the men have been transferred from Guantanamo Bay to other countries, many of them for "continued detention."

And then set free.

Decisions by more than a dozen countries in the Middle East, Europe and South Asia to release the former Guantanamo detainees raise questions about whether they were really as dangerous as the United States claimed, or whether some of America's staunchest allies have set terrorists and militants free.
