A joint venture of two Northern Virginia companies received an Army contract, potentially worth billions of dollars, to provide language interpretation and translation services for the war in Iraq.
The five-year contract awarded to Global Linguistic Solutions, a joint venture of Falls Church-based DynCorp International and Springfield-based McNeil Technologies, has a maximum value of about $4.65 billion.
Work on the contract is scheduled to begin in March. The contract was issued by the Army's Intelligence and Security Command, but Global Linguistic Solutions also will provide language and translation services to other U.S. agencies in Iraq.
Global Linguistic Solutions will employ up to 6,000 locally hired translators and up to 1,000 U.S. citizens who have security clearances and are native speakers of languages spoken in Iraq.
"The ability to communicate effectively with the Iraqi people is critical to a successful outcome in Iraq," says DynCorp CEO Herbert Lanese in a statement.
